Howdy all,
I am on the fence, about to jump ship from iOS, and trying to decide on a phone. Right now its between the Galaxy Nexus (Cheap, specs still relevant, not so flashy looking, pure Android) and the Galaxy S3 (top of the line specs).
I went to the Verizon store today to get some first hand experience with the two. I was severely disappointed by the screen on the GS3. While very sharp and clear, the brightness was surprisingly low. I made sure the auto-brightness was off and that the slider was to maximum. It was still really dim, even compared to the lower end LG sitting next to it. I came home and did some research specific to the screen brightness and I see it mentioned in several reviews as a con. I also found actual tests that prove the issue: GS3 puts out 220 lux vs the 550 lux of the One X and iPhone. Even the GNex is like 340 lux. This matches with what I saw - the GS3 at full was about the same as my iphone 60% or so. People can argue the merits of a dim or bright screen (personally I prefer really bright displays), but those are the facts.
My question is, since this was most likely a battery saving move by Samsung, is there any way to increase the screen brightness above the stock maximum if the phone is rooted running a custom ROM/kernel? I am ok with slightly lower battery life if I am not constantly trying to increase the brightness to no avail.
Thanks
PS - please dont get me wrong. The GS3 is an amazing phone. I just think the dim screen would make me crazy, especially if I am always seeing my wife tanning in the glow from her iPhone 4S.
