Help Increasing screen brightness without being able to see the screen (e.g. gesture)

If I read using my phone or tablet in bed either after I've switched my light off or before I've switched my light on I have to turn the brightness all the way down and use a filtering app to reduce the brightness below the minimum supported by the backlight. The problem occurs when I forget to disable the filter and restore the brightness before leaving home. If I'm caught outside in that situation, I've no way to increase the brightness because I can't see the screen.

Does anyone know of a solution, perhaps using a gesture where I wouldn't need to see the screen?

My tablet is a rooted Hudl 2 with Xposed installed. The automatic brightness control doesn't work so well.

Maybe look into tasker. You could set it to dim your display for a certain time range and go back to auto brightness after a certain time in the morning. It can be complicated to use but very handy once you get a useful task created.

There is a lot you can do with tasked, check out the subforum here: http://androidforums.com/forums/tasker.1930/

You could look at an app called Zap's Gestures. You can define your own gesture to run an app or shortcut..
