[INFO] Tether SGT 10.1 to Phone via Bluetooth

*Please note, as of July 1st this is confirmed to work only with
Motorola Droid X

If you get it to work with other phones, please make a post here with your success and I'll add it to the list above.

I didn't see this posted on here anywhere so I thought I'd put this out here. I was curious if I could pair my Droid X with my newly purchased tablet via Bluetooth and utilize my phone's 3G data connection. The answer is yes. This may be old news to some, but it wasn't to me. And I am sure there are others out there that don't know this either. Here are the steps to follow:

1. On your tablet make sure the "Bluetooth Tethering" is not checked. I tried this and it didn't work. Go to settings>wireless & networks>tethering and uncheck the box.

2. Enable airplane mode on the tablet.

3. Now go to settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth.

4. Now the same for the phone settings>wireless & networks> enable bluetooth.

5. At this point both devices need to be discoverable. This should be inside the wireless and networks>bluetooth settings area on both the tablet and phone.

6. Once both are discoverable you can go to your tablet and select the phone in order to pair the two, settings>wireless & networks>bluetooth settings>

7. You should get a confirmation on both devices...just say OK.

8. At this point on the tablet you should see the phone with a wrench out beside it.

9. Select the wrench and tell it to use the phone as a tether.

That should do it. I hope this helps someone like it did me.

You won't see a tethering option on yours if it is a WiFi only model.

Actually you will. If you turn on BT and then go into BT settings once the two devices are paired. On the right hand side you will see a wrench, click it. It will open another window with an option of tethering to the paired device, which is the phone. I hope that helps.

I'm a bit confused with your post. When you pair a Tab to (in my case) a Droid X phone, under Bluetooth settings for the paired device (you reach it by touching the wrench icon next to the device name) is an option for Profiles and one of the profiles you can activate is the "connect to device for Internet access." You don't need to "root" anything. And it works perfectly. :D

I don't understand your confusion. I never mentioned rooting the phone. The path to connecting via BT wasn't crystal clear and I was just posting a simple how to. Can you explain your confusion?

antnyh:
1) My Galaxy 10.1 Tab has no such feature labeled as "Bluetooth Tethering" nor a Tethering section
2) I did not need to turn on airline mode to enable bluetooth
3) Again, there is no mention of tethering - the lable says "Internet Access: Use for Internet Access"

Doesn't seem to work with the Evo 3D.

I get to the screen pictured above and I don't have the "internet access" option.

My devices will only "pair' as well they don't say "connected"

Doesn't work with my iphone 4,
phone says it isnt compatible.
although i am seeing the use as internet access button on the tab side the phone wont pair.

Thanks antnyh for this hint, it was not obvious to me.
I was able to tether a Galaxy tab 10.1 with a macbook (Snow Leopard) using Bluetooth.

Here are the settings required on the Mac:

* Open Bluetooth preferences, click on "Advanced...", then check "Share my Internet connection with other Bluetooth Devices".

* In Bluetooth preferences, click on "Sharing Setup...", then select "Internet Sharing" (do not check the box yet). On the right, select the connection that you want to share (Ethernet or Airport). Check the box that says "To Computers using... Bluetooth PAN".
Now check the box on the left that says "Internet Sharing".

* Now pair your tablet with the macbook and enable tethering, as described in the original post (except that you don't have to enable airplane mode).

This is crazy! Why would you want to tether with a macbook thur bluetooth! If your getting wifi with your macbook just use the same wifi your getting with your tab!

I have now tried this with my Evo 3D = FAIL!

I tried with a Evo 4G = FAIL!

I used a family members Droid X = WIN!!!!!!

Just re-upped w/ Sprint for the 3D so I need to make either that or the Evo work. Any suggestions?

Motorola Atrix 4G doesn't work , no Surprise since AT&T locks down lots of features ... Though I can pair to my Galaxy 10.1 , no option is presented for internet access.

Wasn't there an Android Market App that can be run on both Android Phone and Android Tablet to allow tethering?

Just set up pdanet for tablet on my Evo 4G and my 10.1. It worked well over bluetooth. You can search for it in the Market.

Yes, the combination of DX and Tab works. Yet another DroidX victory. My little DX just keeps on trucking right along. I've had friends try with other phones with no luck. BTW the bluetooth internet sharing is much faster at connecting than using my hotspot and it doesn't randomly loose 3G like my hotspot does sometimes.

Another droid X win. Works really really well. In fact this thread was what got me to buy the Tab. The blue tooth connects and works perfectly all day. You tube videos, E-mail, web browsing, data link support for google maps and nav. Seriously its just perfect.

thanks for the deailed info as i hadnt had a chance to stess the connection to that extent.

If you try to use the WiFi hotspot tethering to the Tab with the Verizon DroidX, up pops a disclaimer on the Tab stating that you have to fork over $20 a month to use the WiFi hotspot feature of the DroidX. Using Bluetooth is the work-around -- no charges.
