how to check to see if contact and pictures are backed up by google

I don't know about pictures as I don't sync that type of thing with Google. But for contacts, log in to your GMail account through a web browser. Then you'll spot a small downward-pointing arrow next to the red word "GMail" to the left. Click on that (or the word GMail) and select "Contacts" from the menu. That will let you see which contacts are stored.
