Instagram DM

Help!!
So, I unfollowed someone....and our dm chat has gone... i thought this was normal until someone pointed out that it only happens if I actually delete them or they block me...neither of which are the case.
I have now blocked the person so not sure if this matters...but does anyone have any ideas why they disappeared?

I also had this and I think it's some kind of app bug. I'm sorry I can't help you.
