Install apps to SD card

Hi All,

All earlier posts I could find are at least a few years old, so this is somewhat checking, and hoping, to see if the information is different.

Bottom line - Is there a default way (without rooting) to have apps install to the SD card?

I am looking at buying the new Sony Xperia Z2 tablet and trying to decide on the 16gig for $499 or the 32gig for $599. I would prefer to buy the 16gig for $499 and buy a 64gig sd card for $40. Saves a few bucks and provides more space in the end.

However, I don't want to skimp on the internal memory if I am just going to run into trouble down the road. I know with a 16gig they end up using about 6 or 7 gig for its own software, leaving really only 9 or 10 actual space I can use.

Stuff like movies, music and files I can put on the sd card no problem. But I probably have upwards of 800 - 1000 apps I own, of course only about 100 - to maybe 150 I use to a point I will re-install. But many of these apps store their info locally too and I don't want to run into trouble.

Have things gotten better in Android where this can be done more easily or by default? The Sony comes with Android 4.4 I hear.

Thanks all.

Google have totally changed the way SD Cards are handled so I'm not entirely sure it's possible any more.

I know on my Sony Z1, even on 4.2.2, I couldn't install or move apps to the SD Card & the option still isn't there after updated to 4.4.2.

Fwiw, Sony aren't too bad with bloat and I'd nearly 12GB free to use out of the box.

OP, do you not see the "move to SD card" button when viewing the apps through your settings?

Some Apps like Facebook don't allow movement to SD card AFAIK.

SD card meaning USB storage not External SD card.

In the case of Facebook at least, there is good reason. No app that requires boot notification or includes a built-in widget can function from sd. Facebook is both!

Depends on the apps, but I've never ran into problems with storage limits using 16GB devices. In truth, I've never owned a device that has more than that in internal memory. However, I don't keep a lot of games. I usually uninstall them when I'm done. Games are the only ones that are problematic in terms of size. Although AFAIK, many with huge data sizes allow moving the data files to sd card.

I don't think you can "install" directly to sd card, but you can move to sd card after the app is installed (at least in 4.3...don't know about 4.4). It's not "default".... you have to move each program yourself manually.

I would only move big infrequently used programs to sd. Frequently used apps perhaps should not be on sd...could wear it out.
