Installation Unsuccessful

Is anyone else having problems updating apps. I have been getting an error message after an app is finished downloading "install unsuccessful." i have plenty of memory so it's not a space issue. Some apps will install some will not. Any ideas?

UPDATE

I finally found someone who has had some experience with my problem. A Verizon rep said that the two virus scanner apps on my Droid X were causing problems with some apps as they tried to install/update. The virus protection apps were also preventing my phone OS from upgrading. After removing "Lookout" and "Watchdog" my droid was able to download and install OS 4.5 and I no longer have any problems installing or upgrading my apps.

The Verizon rep told me virus protection and malware apps are unnecessary. Google is constantly changing the OS in order to stay head of any problems. He says he rarely ever hears of infected phones.

It sounds like you are having a problem with the smdl2tmp1.asec file. I had this a couple weeks ago. It was really easy to fix with Root Explorer, but I don't know if you have to be rooted and use it to fix the problem. The file just needs to be deleted since it is a temp file, but sometimes it gets hung up and doesn't delete itself like it should.

Any one else got any Ideas? It seems to be a random problem. Most apps will download and install but every so often during the install phase, the app won't.

I have had this in the past myself. i do not really know the answer, but I think that in some cases they are rooted apps and require a rooted system to install. Some are system apps and do not properly install that way. You have to copy them into /system/apps directory and reboot the phone. Some can be installed using a program like Titanium. Do not take any of this as the gospel but these comments are based upon what I have seen and my assumptions. I would love to hear someone who really knows to explain how this works.

My phone's not rooted but Ill look into it. Thanks.

Now that I think about it, the file is on the SD card. It cannot be seen from a non-rooted file viewer like Astro, but if you take the card out and look at it through a card reader then you can find it and delete it from your pc. It is in the ".android_secure" folder.

I've had this happen to me, and found it was because I've forced apps to install to the SD card using the setInstallLocation 1 switch. I found when I turned it off (set it back to 0) I could install things again. I've since put it back to 1 with no issues, occassionally an app won't update, but if I move it back to the phone storage, update it and then move it back to the SD card it generally works.

I've discovered that apps on the SD will not update. They have to be on the phones internal memory. That kind of sucks, having to move apps back and fourth between the SD card and phone when updating.

Did you try the different potential solutions and if so, what were the results?

This is strange....
Do you have a custom ROM installed and did you move your apps with APP2SD software (or similar) or moved with a stock applications software, that is included in the stock ROMs ?

After doing some research I figured out how to get around the problem.

If you are getting an "Update Unsuccessful" message...
Some apps like "Android System Info" and "Apps2SD" have a feature that let you move apps to the SD card. Sometimes a portion of an App would actually remain on the phone causing the update error. Move the app off the SD card and back onto the phone and try updating again.

If you are getting an "Install Unsuccessful" message...
I'm not sure what causes this error. However if you go into your "settings/SD card & phone storage" and unmount the SD card you should be able to download and install the app that's giving you trouble. After your done mount your SD card. You may want to also restart your phone.

There is no such animal as OS 4.5 of Android. The current versions are 2.3 for phones and 3 for tablets. I think the specific incremental versions are 2.3.3 and 3.1.

OS may be the wrong terminology (the Verizon rep called it the phones operating system) but my phone's "System Version" is now 4.5.596. The update took over an hour to download and once it installed I had a new interface and graphics.
My Android Version is 2.3.3 if that's what your thinking of.
