Installing Android on a PC

NashB

Lurker
So i have a Toshiba Encore wt8-B, Small little tablet with Intel Atom, 1.83GHZ 1gig ram, 32 GIG HD.

I am running Android X86- 8.1.0 , 64 bit, solely on it. ( 32 bit wont run on it for some reason).
( had win 10 on it, can't reload it B/C touch screen wont work with re load,,,, many have this problem with reloading windows on it).

Decided to try Android, Touch screen works fine, Android seems to run on it ok but:

It sucks the battery down real fast ( Yes i have tweaked all the settings, shut down back ground apps), still sucks batter down fast--did NOT do this with Win 10.

Camera wont work either, tried various cam apps, not work. Yes Camera shows up in Apps, and is enabled.

Some apps wont run, Prime Video, Electurm, Kindle on it either.

Is there a better Android OS to run on this? ( Have tried, 9.0, 7.1 and others) Only one that runs reasonably well is current one I have installed on it. X86- 8.1.0. 64 bit.

Is there a better Android OS I could try?

you will most likely not get a definite answer to your question. for one you have a very old device which most here will not have any more. and two not many have attempted to do what you are attempting to do.

seems like a very fun project to do. just keep in mind that you most likely will not find a custom rom that will fit your device specifically. i did find the Android x-86 project where i think you got your rom from.

for those curious:
https://www.android-x86.org/

have you tried other releases by them?

I suspect it's missing the drivers for your whatever it is camera hardware. I'm not a dev, but I think to support your particular camera, one would need to obtain the appropriate open source drivers for it, and do a custom Android-x86 build for particular device's hardware. Android is usually built to specific hardware requirements, which includes the drivers.

As for the power drain, I very much suspect it's not optimised for low power consumption and battery saving. The dev probably tested it on their PC, plugged into the mains, where battery saving is not really a consideration.

I don't use those apps myself, but some apps are built for specific processor architectures, which is usually ARM on phones and tablets. And so some apps may not support x86, or you may need to find x86 specific versions(if they exist). Try APKmirror.com. Also Android-x86 is a rooted environment, which some apps can object to running on.

I've tried and messed around with Android-x86 a few times, but only in Virtual Box on a MacBook.

If you really don't want Windows, you could try a GNU/Linux distro like Kubuntu or something? That might support your tablet properly, including the camera?

Thanks for your replies. Yes I have tried multiple releases, x86. 8.1.0 is only one that seems to run best on it.
As for the battery drain, yes I have optimized it, and used batter optimization on it as well.

Thanks again :)

Nonetheless I'll be switching it back to windows 10...

Can you find all the drivers for Win 10? That's the issue I am having. Seems Microsoft in their wisdom does not have the touch screen drivers with win 10 install. Other people have had same issue. Go figure.....

Microsoft includes some drivers with Windows, but may not include the drivers for every available hardware, like for the whatever it is touch-screen device you've got.

Back in the day, PC hardware often came with floppies or CD-ROMs that had the manufacturer's drivers on them, for things like graphic cards, sound cards, etc. But I suspect they don't do that any more. Check the manufacturer's website for your particular PC hardware, that may have the Windows drivers available for download.

Enter your model number here:
https://support.dynabook.com/drivers

It shows me multiple versions when I type "Encore WT8-B" so you'll need the full model number.

Another option - did you have Windows Update search for drivers? It's pretty good at finding them.

I know I'm a little late. But my advice to you, and others trying to install Android onto a x64 system, is to just keep installing Android distributions onto your system until you find one that works properly. Not all distributions work propelry on all devices. Just remember to update Android, before you dismiss a distribution as "not working properly" on your device!
