Help Installing apps headache...

Hello all, my GF bought her first adroid phone two days ago.. Been trying to imstall .apk files by transferring them to the microSD (via usb connection) but when I start her app to install other apps ((!!!)) it just won't see whichever app I want to install.. would it work better if I physically mount the microSD in my laptop card reader, copy the file on it, re-insert it in the phone and then install it ? Or am I just missing one tiny detail ?

To install apps from .apk files you need to enable installing apps from other sources (other than the market). You need a file browser like Astro. And you need the apk on the sd card while the sd card is mounted my the phone. If you've got the phone plugged in to the pc as usb storage, the sd card is unmounted to allow file copying. When you unmount the card on the pc and remount it on the phone, find it with astro and you will be able to install it.
