Apps Installing Eclipse and the Android SDK (Windows XP)

Hey,

First time poster. I'm a phd ME student and have done a bit of programming in C++ and matlab (kinda new to java though.) I just got the eris and have been messing with an ipod touch for a while. I'm extremely interested in making some apps and have found this an awesome place to start!

Just thought I would post up, that it might be a good idea to redo the first post of this thread to update. I had to do a bit of googling and digging through the posts to solve some of my issues.

Again, the format is awesome, could just use an update!!

How?? I get the same error message any time I try to create a new Android Project. How did you get past this? thanks

thanks!!! This really, really helped me get everything downloaded and setup!!!:D thanks!!!!!! The last time I tried to do all this, my computer messed up and I had to completely reboot and restore my computer. This is much helpful!! Merci beaucouuuuppp!!!
 
I think I am figuring it out but it would be nice to have updated screen shots of the process. Has anyone packaged up all the files and created a script or anything to install eveything?

Is Eclipse the way I should be going? I went to Borders to get an Android book and there wasn't a single one in stock. And it looks like a few are on preorder status. I guess I'll have to hit up Amazon. Any suggestions for a new developer. I know VB and SQL but I imagine this will be an entirely new animal.
 
Followed the guide and I got it up and running in no time on a win7 (x64) box!!!

First of all, thanks for the links etc etc.

I am stuck.

Where I need to create the path, It dosnt mention anything about about Java. Is has a path of

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\

If I changed the above line to what it needs to be, would it have any detrimental effect??

Is it this that needs to be changed. See screen shot below. I have follwed everything to the letter so far :)

Brilliant tutorial but I'm having a bit of a problem with the Android SDK.

As you can see I've tried both the https:// and http:// with the force option in settings, and also the http:// with respitory.xml at the end, still nothing. Really have no idea how to get around it. ;/

Hi,
I'm trying to install a platform but when I type android the manager
loads then I click Available Software then select the
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml repository
I get this error.,
Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml,
reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP
in the settings.

So I click the settings tab and select the force through http then
click apply and save then nothing happens it doesn't save it because
if i then close it and reload it the checkbox is unticked so it's not
even using the force through http method. I get the same error if i go
straight back to available software.

I'm using Fedora and wget can download the xml file using ssl so I
don't know why it's getting this https ssl error.

Any ideas anyone?

I'm trying to set this up. When I get to the step to run the testrun project I get this error.

Path for project must have only one segment.

What do I need to do?
 
I figured it out. I had to go to Project -> Properties and under Run/Debug Settings I had to Edit my configuration and add the Project name under the Android tab.
 
I saw someone else having this same issue however no fix for it, i'm questioning my intelligence atm lol.

When i go to start eclipse, i get:

A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: C:\Eclipse\jre\bin\javaw.exe javaw.exe in your current PATH

do i just need to copy the java directories into the eclipse directory?
 
For those having issues with win7 64 bit try downloading the 64 bit version of BOTH Eclipse and java and see if that cures your problems......

To set your PATH to where javaw.exe is located (Check your PC, it should be something like C>ProgramFiles>Java etc). Just add a link in the PATH variable which is located by clicking on Start then right click on Computer>Properties>Advanced System Settings>Environment Variables then in System Variables scroll down to PATH and Edit. Now add the PATH to the Javaw.exe to the end of the PATH (DO NOT OVERWRITE IT !!!!)

I read this whole thread and saw that many people had the same problem I am having. I have been trying for a week to get this installed with no success. So hopefully I will find an answer and post it here for others.

Using: Vista Ultimate
What I have done so far...

1. Download and Install Android SDK (software development kit)

Android SDK | Android Developers

2. Install Java... Go this website click on Java SE
[url=http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html]Java SE Downloads - Sun Developer Network (SDN)


3. Install Eclipse
Eclipse downloads - file unavailable file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/helios/SR1/eclipse-java-helios-SR1-win32.zip

4. Went to: Control Panel, System Maintenance, System, Advanced System Settings, Environment Variables...
Scroll to "Path" choose Edit...
Add this ";d:\android\tools" to the end of line (not deleted/replaced the line)

*** I have no idea what #4 above does ***

My Android folder has a SDK Manager.exe icon in it which runs Android SDK AVD Manager

My Eclipse folder has an Eclipse.exe icon which runs Java Ecipse - Helios

This is the end of the good news....
Here is the problem:

I went ran Eclipse...
Went to Help... Install New Software...

I added this site...

https://dl-ssl.google.com

None of these worked.

I tried unchecking the "Contact all update sites..." square like one poster recommended.

Other people recommended checking the the "Force site...", but it is not in Eclipse but rather in the Android SDK AVD Manager. I tried this to.

I am making forward progress....

You must use the Eclipse 3.5 version not the most current 3.6 version.
I installed classic 3.5 and it does not download from some sites, but does from this one...

I also had to click the box that reads... "Contacts All The Sites..."

Now I have a new problem...
I get an error message that reads...
"Location of the Android SDK has not been setup in the preferences"

If anyone knows how to set the location I would appreciate the help....

i have done above steps properly and i have installed SDK properly.... my demo pgm is also running...but when i click on main.XML file. eclipse gets closed automatically.....
 
@abhishek.bhise, not sure your exact problem, but be sure to use Eclipse Classic (not Eclipse Java). For example even the latest 3.6.1 works. (not sure, but maybe this is an issue for @Dont_panic too?) I just did a fresh install on another computer with that and even the latest JDK 6 Update 22 yesterday and it works.
 
I tried installing classic Eclipse but I still cannot get the remote update site to install. I appreciate the tip, I am willing to try anything.

The Classic Eclipse still reads "Java - Eclipse SDK" on the top.
Eclipse SDK
Version 3.6.1

The Java Eclipse reads "Java - Eclipse" on the top
Eclipse IDE for Java Developers
Version: Helios Service Release 1


Is either of these versions correct? What are all these version of Eclipse for?

I really want to get started programming in Android but I cannot get this installed.

Anyone know the "SDK Location:" of the root directory I should choose under Preferences on Eclipse? What am I looking for in the "Browse..." box?


"After restart, update your Eclipse preferences to point to the SDK root directory ($SDK_ROOT):

Select Window > Preferences… to open the Preferences panel. (Mac OS X: Eclipse > Preferences)

Select Android from the left panel.

For the SDK Location in the main panel, press Browse... and find the SDK root directory.

Press Apply, then OK"

Got it... I used to location I installed Android SDK and it seems to have done some stuff....
D:\Android is what I used. May have been C:\Android or whatever for you.

I will try and make complete notes for when I have it all up and working in case anyone is as dumb as me and needs similar help.

One hurdle after another. I am really surprised at how hard this is to get up and running.

I have gotten much closer. I actually have Eclipse running and a Hello Android program typed into the window.

But I am getting this error message....
"Failed to initiate Monitor Thread: unable to establish loopback connection.

Anyone have any advice on how to correct this?

Do I have to run...
Android SDK manager.exe?
emulator.exe?

Does my Android phone have to be plugged in?
Is there any settings on the phone itself I need to make?

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I've been messing around for days trying to get this installed. I finally fixed the last bug which was the error saying that JVM 1.5 was not installed on my machine (it was!!). The way to fix this is to edit the eclipse.ini file, by adding the full path on your PC to the files called javaw.exe and jvm.dll. See my example below from the eclipse.ini file (text marked in bold is what I added to the file):

Regarding the android plugin, I couldn't get it to download straight from the web, so I downloaded it to my PC and then set the eclipse to get it from there instead of from the web.
