Root Instant Root.apk problem when attempting to root

Hi all,

I am trying to route my HTC Hero (locked to Orange UK).

Following jUsT2eXy's instructions :-

1)Download it.
2)Save it to your SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful

Ok, so on step 4, I am opening ASTRO, clicking InstantRoot, clicking Open App Manager (other displayed option is Browse file), clicking Install (then Install again).

It then displays 'Application installed'. However, I get a notification stating 'Install Root failed / Root access was not acquired'. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

More info if required :-

Firmware = 1.5

Baseband version = 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29

Kernel version = 2.6.27-430d1aea
htc-kernel@and18-2 #959

Build number = 2.73.61.66 CL#82177 release-keys

Software version = 1.0.0.A6288
 
Any ideas, anyone? I got the phone on the understanding that I could easily root/install a custom ROM but I can't even root!

I also tried the instantroot.apk method & i don't think its done anything. I just seem to have an app installed on my phone.
Downloaded droidwall to my phone after instantrooting it & it opens but i keep getting errors. I also tried Overclockwidget which appeared to do nothing so i don't think it worked.
I have a sim free HTC Hero (bought sim free from factory)

What did it say when you ran instantroot.apk?

The issue I had when I was getting an error with instantroot.apk was with the ROM I had at the time - 2.73.61.66 - which I downgraded to 2.73.61.5 here :-

HTC Hero - ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero (Orange)

Please note these are Orange ROMs, you say yours is sim free.

After doing this, instantroot.apk ran perfectly.

I hope some of this helps.

It had completed & it was apparently rooted. But i apps that work on rooted Heros crashed like Doidwall.
