Help Insufficient device storage

Hi!

I have a Samsung Galaxy Y with Android 2.3.6. I recently got a notification which said that a software update was available but when I tried to download it I got the following message:

Unable to download software update (12.53MB). Not enough space in device storage or SD card. Delete some items.
However, according to the phone's application settings 161 MB of the device memory is used and 29 MB is free. On the SD card, 253 MB is free. So why am I not able to download and install the update? Could anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks.

Hi Horned owl, and welcome to AF :)

Don't know about the SD card, but I know that the Play Store complains about lack of space if a download would leave you with less than 10% of internal space. Maybe it's the same with system updates? Because if so, 29MB - 12.5 MB = 16.5MB, which is less than 10% of the total, so if it uses the same rule that might be it. Just a guess though.

If you have a 3MB app which you could uninstall temporarily without losing anything important you could see whether my guess is right. Or try clearing app caches to free some space - browser and play store caches can easily be larger than this (I don't do social networking, but I'll bet they cache a lot of stuff).

If it's allowed to download to SD then I don't understand why it's complaining about that.

Hadron, thanks a lot! I managed to free some space and then I was able to download the update successfully.
