interesting article about wireless price wars

nada at&t or verizon wireless consider sprint a serious competitor. Neither wants to acknowledge Sprint value because it would be an admission of overcharging.
 
At least "Sprint, poor Sprint" got a mention. What about US Cellular? They are still around, right? According to this article, there's ATT, Verizon, and the "other two carriers" - TMobile and Sprint.
 
I'm kinda holding off on getting an EVO, because I think sooner than later, they are going to HAVE to lower the initial price to about $99.00 or so to compete with AT&T's new 4g Inspire.
Which means the outside sellers will be cheaper still, hopefully.....

Don't bet on it. Some phones never come down to dirt cheap. One thing that makes Evo unlikely to do that soon is its still one of the few phones that can take advantage of 4G so well. Until there's a bunch of phones that can do that, why would HTC or Sprint want to lower the price?

I think your best bet on that would be to hope to see the resell value going down to around $100. Of course, all phones eventually lose resale value, if you are willing to be a year or so behind the technology when you get it. :) The truth is that the carriers arent really making money off of these phone deals. They make their money from the actual contract. The only time that they lower the sale of the phone is to get rid of a surplus of leftover phones (ie: the pre) or to gain a bunch of new customers. I think that the phone has been out too long for the second one to take affect. I actually traded my first evo a while ago for a big screen tv, so the evo is definitely holding its value.

Lol, that's kinda what I was thinking. It's strange though that the writer of the article didnt even mention the rates that Sprint was offering. You would think that he would have done a bit more research to make sure that he didnt sound bias towards a specific carrier or against a specific carrier?

or maybe he actually has Sprint and is ticked off about the $10 increase. lol
 
Price war in cell service .. is not new... it is renewed every year.

Sprint has never really been great on initial price purchase of phones. they normally SUCK in this area. Typically you will see that sprints X phone is higher than other carriers for the same X phone (but with a different look/name).
Because....

their marketing strategy is about plan pricing. One of best for the 2yr over all cost. the higher priced carriers always have great deals on the phone; because they want the higher monthly fees!

You nailed it on the head regarding phone pricing. Carriers eat money on phone costs, so they can get you for two years. It only makes sense that the less they get you for in contact the more they will charge for phones.
