Help Internal, external storage android tv M8 box

Hi I've got a quick question I could really do with some help.

The SD card reader on my M8 box is broken and i've been using a usb key to store my Kodi library however last night I noticed that even though the files are stored on my usb drive it is taking up space in the internal memory too. When using the SD card I noticed this wasn't the case. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or is there a way to maybe make the external usb my internal memory?

Also if I was to get a usb SD card reader and plug my sd card in that way would it show up on my device as a usb device or read as an SD card?

Your SD card would be seen as a USB drive if you used an adapter to plug your SD card into a USB SD card reader. It would convert your SD card into a USB drive, for all intents and purposes.
