Internal Storage Space: A Rant

Ugh, this morning my phone just about crashed on me. Internal space was at 16 and there was no room to update apps that needed to be updated. Also, for the first time I saw a notification for too many texts so an incoming text was rejected. Funny thing is from seeing this thread before I had reset my max text message to 25 per conversation and delete any conversations Im not using. I only have 82 texts in the phone and it said there was no more room.

I think my phone has a virus.

My phone did the same with only 18 MB left, for some reason when you get down to that level it no longer accepts text messages. Clean up some space and it will go away.
 
Have any of you who has been using the ADB method ever encounter any updating issues? I recall reading about folks experiencing problems updating certain apps after using the ABD method when it first appeared some time ago.

PS, will does this method still work on 2.2.2?

I use it on 2.2.2 and have no troubles with updating. It will allow some apps with widgets that don't have good checking routines to install on the SD card, which means you'll lose the widgets when you restart the phone if you don't move that app back to the phone (I think that happened with Calengoo when it was in beta). However, no other kinds of problems.
 
Thanks for reply Hook, I finally went about going through what turned out to be a pretty simple procedure. It took me forever to figure out some of the mistakes I was making as well as the relocation of the folder that Mostly also went through. It seems Google updated and relocated the adb.exe to the platform-tools folder instead of the tools folder as listed in various how to sites.

Nevertheless, I almost doubled my internal memory up to 40mb after moving 25 apps or so to the SD card. Had a scare when I couldn't find any of the moved apps after I rebooted the phone. Went in the settings>manage apps> list:eek: and it simply wasn't even listed but it turned up eventually. I guess the system needs more time to process all the apps in the sd card:confused:

Many of Googles' apps could not be moved as you'll notice that the "move to SD card" button isn't available. On the other hand, something like Flash Player reduced itself from 12+mb to 8.27mb. It still seems to function fine too after a quick test:cool:

Well, at least I finally did it:). I procrastinated this method since it came out many months ago, thanks for bringing it up and giving me a push guys:D
 
So funny thing, I tried a different Apps2Sd application and removed my old one. Immediately my storage went from 20 to 26. I cant imagine that old app was using so much memory at only 163kb.
 
Well my internal memory always seems to fluctuate randomly between 20 and 26 so I wouldn't read into that too much.
 
Cache.

If you have root, grab a cache cleaner from the Market and it'll free up a few MB every so often.
 
Yeah, browser, market and mail seem to guzzle the most. But they get cleared automatically in due tine so I can't be bothered to clear them every so often:p
 
I've been enjoying my phone all over again after this minor ADB trick:) I've since installed numerous apps to increase the phones productivity and I'm right back at 25MB of internal again:D:p


A bit off topic but out of curiosity, and concern really, do you guys foresee any issues when the GB update is installed? I'd hate to see it cause an OS update failure or something:eek:

I suppose I should uninstall enough apps to be safe and actually reverse the storage back to 0.:confused::(
 
Thanks Rusty, it went without a hitch.

FYI: Before the manual update, I deleted several apps to get the internal to around 40MB free and updated. The GB update went though with no problems and after all was said and done, the ADB trick is still set to store all apps2sd in GB:D

Reinstalled several deleted apps and some new ones, moved some apps back to the sd card and I for some reason, I seem to have more internal space then I ever did. Did GB free up some space or something?
 
Kinda, yes.

It comes with some updated Google apps, so some that had been updated on Froyo were stored in /data and now they're in /system. If they're updated again via the Market they'll be back on /data stealing your MB's.
 
Rust i need some help, i follwed all the steps in the mentioned procedure but i am not able to get my device recognized by my comp (USB drivers have already been installed, Phone is in USB debug mode),

Please help

I am getting this error at the command prompt

Redrage, have you checked your space since installing GB? I notice a large increase in the internal storage, might be enough that you don't need to do anything else.

I'm stuck on 3. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB-cable. Your OS will prompt you to install new drivers. Choose to install them from the android-sdk/usb_driver folder. Do not mount your device; you only need to plug-in the cable

I connect my phone (yes debugging is enabled), but it just sits there. I get no prompt to install the new drivers. Can anyone help?

That was it. I was able to get through to step 5.

I got the serial number, and then typed in the last part of step 5: All you have to do next is entering adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2. Voil�, you�re done! Android will now install apps to the SD card by default.

But I can't move anything to the SD. You say you moved Flash, but when I click on it from my "manage apps" the "move to sd" is still unavailable. I even uninstalled it, and redownloaded it, but it still went to internal storage. How do you move apps?

Do I have to do anything else? After I entered adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2 I typed "exit" and unplugged my phone. Did I miss a step?

Never mind. I figured it out. I didn't capitalize the "I" in setInstallLocation.

It works now!!!! Thanks for all the tips and help. :D
