Root Internal storage went way down!

Hey so this is my first Bionic. Long story short, I rooted and installed CM 10.2.1 and now my total internal storage is down to like over 3gb. It was a total of 16gb.

What happened? Is this common?

Looking at your photo, it says that you have 8 GB storage in internal storage. That's just what it should be - the Bionic has "16 GB" of storage, but only 8 GB were set aside for the internal /sdcard. The rest is for the system and data internal partitions.

See The Droid Bionic has 16GB of internal storage, but you can't have it all | Android Central

Unless I am missing something...

Before CM, it said 16 total and now it says 3.xx total. So no matter how much of it was for me the user, its still a major drop in storage.

But the picture you show says it has 8 GB total? With nearly 8 GB available? I'm confused...

Also, are you sure that you weren't looking at the external SD card storage space available before the CM install? There are two storage locations available on the Bionic - an internal storage area with 8 GB free, and an external SD card slot that can hold micro-SD cards up to 32 GB.

Clearly you're misunderstanding. I bought a 16gb Bionic. When I got it, "/data" was 16gb total storage. After I installed CM 10.2.1, "/data" is now under 4gb *total* storage. 12gb of storage just DISAPPEARED. And CM isn't even 200mb.

So again I will say this. I know what I got. I know the number I saw because I am precise and OCD, it was a very important detail. When you look at the screenshot, look in the corner where it says "/data".

Better yet I'll show you another screenshot you'll be familiar with.

See what I circled? That is what used to say 16gb. I'm not a noob.

The OTHER "internal storage" on bottom is actually just the built in sdcard. It has stayed as 8gb so don't worry about that part, it never changed.

In that case, maybe the phone was misreporting internal storage, or was giving a total of internal SD card storage and the other partitions. (It could also be that it was counting the total of the internal SD card; notice the .android_secure file on the screenshot in your first post. Apps and data can be stored there as well as the /data partition.)

The Bionic has 16 GB of storage, and that's it. 8 GB are set aside for the internal sd card, 4 GB for the /data partition, and 4 GB for something else (not sure - probably the other internal partitions, plus all of the stuff the Bionic needed when it was docked with the old webtop stuff that Moto used to sell). It's all carved from that 16 GB - the internal sd card is not an extra 8 GB, but 8 GB of the total 16 GB storage.

Again, I'll point you to this article: The Droid Bionic has 16GB of internal storage, but you can't have it all | Android Central with a screenshot of the storage settings. The first item, "Application storage", is the /data partition, and it shows 3.52 GB available out of the total 4 GB that was partitioned to /data. (The "internal storage" in that screenshot is the internal sd card.) That's the way the phone is partitioned.

Mk.

Are you by chance using saferstrap?

It's been quite a while but I am remembering that creating multiple recovery partitions in SS would make storage space "disappear".

I am, but that can't possibly be it, I didn't make an extra slot, I simply flashed it in the stock slot.

Right, but you do have a "stock" slot and a "safe" slot. The "safe" slot has to be stored somewhere.
It could also be something about the way CM formatted the partition. ie, even though there was 8GB available it only formatted 4GB. I never played with CM directly on my Bionic so I cannot say for sure that is it. In fact I only played with a few custom ROMS on my bionic. I do remember seeing strange things with SS and how the different ROM slots were set up (size wise).

I think the key to what you're seeing is in there somewhere but cannot say for sure.

Again, it's been too long...

omg never mind my previous statements, I thought I was in the wrong thread, I was talking about a screen issue lmfao.

Regarding the storage issue: I figured everything out, I just misunderstood how the storage worked. I didn't take into account that the 16gb was separated into 3 or 4 different parts.

The safe slots don't get created until you create them. You don't have to create one. When you do, they are created in internal storage, or the internal sd card, or /sdcard - whatever you want to call it. It shows up as a file that consumes part of that 8 GB chunk, inside the folder called /safestrap. You can definitely see them.

The slots are just virtual copies of the internal partitions /sys, /data, and /cache, etc., that get mounted in place of the real things.

But, moot point, the original question is answered...
