I just bought the Moto G 2nd Generation 16 GB model. I have not yet installed a SD card. When I check under storage, the total space shown is only 5.51 GB. What is using the balance storage space?
 
The Android OS will take up a few gigabytes on phones.

Are you sure you have the 16GB model? The 8GB version has 5.5GB available to the user so I'd double check since that's exactly how much space you have.

Thank you for the reply. The label inside the phone says that it is 16GB phone.

Is there any other way of verifying this?

Welcome to Android Forums.

There are a lot of numbers floating around. Exactly what are you looking at that is reporting 5.51GB?

On the Droid Maxx under Settings | Storage I have ...
- Total Space 32GB
- Android OS 6.52GB
- Storage 25.4GB

Under settings when I click on storage, under Internal Storage, Total Space is shown as 5.51 GB and available space is 3.74 GB
 
If it was me ... I would be in the Verizon store ... check another phone like mine and see what it said ... then discuss it with the store's "go to" person.

Unfortunately, I am in India and here Motorola is only selling it online - no stores sales. Anyway thank you for the advise. Will try and check if Motorola has a service centre around where I stay.
 
can you contact support from the place you got it and suggest that it doesn't make sense and you would like a replacement?
