Root [International] Almost ready to root N7100

Stuart99

Newbie
Hi guys,
Ive been doing tons of reading on rooting and flashing my N7100. But before I do I've a few questions that you kind folk on here I'm sure could answer in 5 secs.

I know I have to use Heimdall suite, as I'm using a mac, anyone report any issues? I'm with O2 carrier.

Also, once I've rooted, I was thinking about using Omega ROM. Is it as straight forward as flashing it, or do I have to super selective which ROM I flash in accordance to version of jellybean ect?

One final question, once flashed, do I have to set about re installing all my apps and contacts, ect, or can they be restored using CWM which is what I'm planning on using for backups etc?

Cheers
Stu

I'm not sure about methods of rooting since i haven't really looked into that yet.

Judging by some videos of flashing roms, it looks like its a go a head and flash thing. Along with gapps if the rom is aosp. Its been like that on previous Samsung devices as well, at least ones ive owned.

For apps you're gonna have to use titanium backup. In the past many people have suggested not restoring data but if its a touchwiz to touchwiz rom ive never had any serious problems with data restores on apps. Actually, i dont think ive ever had a problem restoring data to apps but experiences vary.

The great thing about these devices is that theyre easy to restore should something go wrong. Quickly read up on restore methods since its your first attempt at these things .(im assuming by your post). Its better to be prepared than having to spend a few hours when time comes to actually have to do it. I should know lol.

Cheers man,
I was going to Root first then read more on NANDRiod backups and making other backups.

I'm presuming Id have to make a Titanium/NANDRIOD back up to ext SDcard as flashing a ROM wipes everything?

Flashing ROMs do not affect data like your backups and files. When you read stuff like "Do a full wipe", and when you do that using CWM or TWRP (which I recommend and use) the general thought process is that *everything* on the phone will get erased like your contacts, texts, files (sounds, photos, videos), backups. But that is not the case. What gets wiped out are the ROM (treat it like the OS of your phone), apps and app data.

While backing up to ext SDcard is recommended, technically you can backup to internal memory as well and not worry about it getting deleted when doing the wipe.

NANDROID backup includes entire thing, it's like a image of the phone.

You use Titanium backup to backup apps and app data (in the context of this conversation, you can do more with it like freezing, uninstalling apps) and restore the same after flashing another ROM than what's currently there in the phone.

I too have a N7100. I used Tookit to root and am using Omega ROM.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The reason I asked about losing ALL data apps and contacts and the like after flashing a new Rom, is I've seen a few videos which show the installation of the omega Rom. After the whole things installed and rebooted the guy had to re enter all Gmail etc, etc like an out of the box phone.

I could be wrong regarding contacts.

As I (and guess, everybody else) use Google contacts, as soon as I sign in with my Gmail account after flashing a ROM, contacts will automatically come from Google's server. So typically we never bother about losing contacts as they are always automatically backedup, in sync and restored.
