Root [International] Backup issue on rooted SG3

Mac_Wood

Newbie
i9300
CF Root SG3 v6.4
Odin 3 v1.85

Hi all,

I recently rooted my Galaxy S3 but while doing a nandroid backup I received the following message:

No/sdcard/.android_secure found.
Skipping backup of apps on external storage
Backing up cache...
No sd.ext found. Skipping backup of sdext.
Generating md5 sum
Backup complete!

I assumed it was because the external sd card wasn't mounted so I mounted the sdcard and did another backup but still got the same message.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to rooting and really quite amazed I managed to root my phone. I don't really want to go any further until I know what the problem is, so any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Mac

Same as Yatezy - I get that message every time but it hasn't ever caused me any trouble when restoring.

As rxpert said - it isn't anything to worry about.

Good on you for being cautious and paying attention though :)

Its likely looking for a partitioned SD card.

Its nothing to worry about

When doing a backup you only need to do boot, data, and system

Thanks all for your reassurances. Rxpert83 you say above you only need to backup boot data and system but when I booted into recovery mode the only option I got was backup. Is that what it means boot, data, and system?

Mac

What you've done is absolutely correct. You've backed up everything you need to from recovery.

To explain a little further, those are the folders backed up via the 'backup' process you executed. You may have noticed it switch between them - it'll say 'backing up /system', then move onto 'backing up /data', etc.. (can't remember the order!)

I'd recommend grabbing a backup of your EFS using an app called KTool. I've never had to restore this, but I've seen people who've needed a backup and haven't got one.

Edit: Just realised you live in Camberley. That's 10 minutes from me :)

I've done the EFS backup. What Rom would you suggest I try Andy?
Nice to hear you're local, I actually live on the Heatherside Estate. Is that nearer or further away from you?

Hah! You're actually about 5 minutes drive from me. I'm in Lightwater, just down red road from you. I've got a long-time friend who lives in that Heatherside estate. In fact, I drove right past only 10 minutes ago back from Camberley.

For a ROM, I'd suggest trying Illusion 2.1. I can't take any credit for finding it - funkylogik recommended it to me, but I am getting along with it really well.

Make sure you download these exact files:

- Illusion 2.1 for i9300 (just click 'download')
- 4.2.2 Google Apps (again, just hit 'download')

The ROM is based on another - SLIM ROM - hence the Google Apps file having the word 'slim' in it. Don't worry, fully compatible.

To flash (make sure that backup you did is saved somewhere safe):

1. Download ROM zip file, store on internal SD card
2. Download Google Apps (often called 'GApps') zip file, store on internal SD card
3. Enter recovery
4. Choose Wipe data/Factory Reset (and then yes)
5. Choose Wipe cache (and then yes)
6. Choose Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache (and then yes)
7. Now go back to main menu again
8. Choose Install zip > Choose zip from sdcard
9. Find the ROM zip and hit install
10. Choose zip from sdcard once again after ROM installed
11. Find the GApps zip and hit install
12. Reboot :D

Worth noting - don't extract any zip files you download. Leave them as they are and flash the zip.

Edit: I'd add that CM 10.1 might be worth giving a shot. I've never actually gone for a CM install before, despite it being arguably the most popular. I'd probably steer clear of CM 10.2 for now since it's very new. There's some discussion in this forum about it.

Illusion is very much stock Android with some really nice touches that you have the choice of enabling or leaving disabled. It has a fantastic settings menu that you can get lost in for hours. Highly customisable, but still Android as it's supposed to be. Love it, personally.

We should be gettin illusions 4.3 build any day now :)

I lived at the top of camberley, the part with all the old HUGE mansions.. we lived in a mock tudor mantion converted into flats called Tudor Mansion. I quite liked camberley, i mostly drank in "spoons" (weatherspoons) i worked in that hotel down the road "penny hill park" and then on the council owned parks in camberley and frimley green :)
Got in a lot of fights down there because people thought i was a squady and wanted to try their luck with a scotsman :(

I've picked up your messages quite late and I'm in Oxford tomorrow so I might try your suggestions tomorrow. Backup is currently on the internal SD should I move it to the external SD?

Surrey boys eh? I used to live in Guildford and had some friends from Camberley :)

cool i went out in guildford a few times :)

I always keep em on on external but it doesnt matter too much, a normal factory reset in recovery doesnt touch anything like that

Whats the lil council estate called at the bottom of camberley across the main road? It was tame compared to the estates up here but pretty rough for surrey :)

The Old Dean.My wife is from that estate, I used to joke with her that the police used to shine there search lights on the houses in her road. It had it's day and there are still some rough elements but I don't think it's as bad as it used to be.

Lol i use to maintain the bowling green down there and the guys i worked with were terrified of the place. I didnt think it was that bad :)

I used to be a milkman for Stokes Dairy and the guys that used to cover the Old Dean round had to be careful they locked their provisions cupboard or the whole lot would get nicked. If they tried to collect arrears they nearly got run over by disgruntled customers!

When I clicked on your Illusion 2.1 Andy the only files available were Illusion 2.5 Alpha as funkylogik mentioned 4.3 build am I going to be alright using the alpha file?

I've just checked where the backup was and although CWM recovery didn't recognise my ext SD it saved it there. I've copied the backup to the intSD just in case

Yes CWM is looking for a partion to save. On a normal rooted phone it won't find one.

Your backup is universally called a Nandroid. It is basically a snapshot of the entire phone at the point it was made, and will restore just about any state of phone if you can get back to recovery to restore it.

A word of warning when copying/cutting a Nandroid, don't alter the folder name, copy as is or the md5 checksum will throw up an error on restoration and it will be useless.

I'd suggest not using an alpha build for your first flash. Although funky said there's very few obvious bugs/problems, it's still an alpha build - i.e. it's expected to be buggy.

I'd suggest using Illusion 2.1 (which is Android 4.2.2) for now. You'll need the i9300 file - make sure whatever file you get says 'i9300' in the filename.

Annoyingly the developer has replaced all 2.1 downloads with the new 2.5 version. He should have started a new thread since it's a different version of Android. There's also a bit of a workaround with Android 4.3 to keep your phone rooted - which I don't know much about (funky does).

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to mirror his files, but I'll host it on my own server Box.com so I can take it down once you've got it.

Here's a direct download for Illusion 2.1 (Android 4.2.2).
Let me know when you've downloaded, I'll take it down.

Google Apps is the same link, here.

Thanks for the link, I'm at work atm so I'll wait till I get home tonight to try it as I only get mobile data not wifi.
I notice the download is for Android 4.2.2 my current build is 4.1.2 is that gonna be a problem?

No problem, just more features ;)

All of us with an i9300 came from 4.1.2, at some point! You're just getting a newer version of Android - one of the benefits of flashing this ROM.

Edit: Unless you're talking about the Google apps download? The ROM is 4.2.2, so the Google Apps package must be a 4.2.2 package. Do not flash that Google Apps file without flashing Illusion first.

Good luck ;)

Use those steps I posted above, you should be set. You should backup your apps using Titanium Backup so you can restore them once you're on Illusion - unless you already sync apps+data to Google. That works too.
