Root [International] Fast, efficient and regularly updated ROM?

Hi all,

My S3 (running stock with Nova Pro over the top) is incredibly sluggish at times, and things like S Memo are destroying my battery life even though I don't use them.

I've decided it's finally time to root my device and put a new ROM on, but it's hard to know where to start.

I've looked at SlimBean which looks great, but maybe a little too stripped down for it to be practical (I'd like at least a lot of the standard/useful apps like a clock/alarm etc)

XperianZe looks fantastic, I really like the aesthetic but it (understandably) isn't kept in line with the latest Android version, though undoubtedly it's updated more frequently than my S3 (on Orange, UK) is right now.

So that leaves Cyanogenmod which is tempting. Are there any other ROMs that would meet my requirements? I guess my main requirements are something simple, fast, and something that won't hammer the battery.

Thanks!

Do you want 4.2.2? I tried Cm10.1 and Sentinel Rom. Both very good, and when i was using each one i thought it was the best. Until i was met with the AOKP Rom. OMG. Amazing battery life, and it's like cm10.1 but with even more features.

Cm10.1- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035141
Sentinel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249984
AOKP - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892056

Remember once you rooted your phone you can create a nandroid backup and install different roms, and see which ones you like, and if you dont like it you can just restore nandroid. Not trying to be biased or anything, but i reccomend AOKP first because thats where i ended up after trying cm roms.

Before you flash this you need to root your phone. :D Then you need to install cwm or philz or some custom recovery. All i9300's come with an unlocked bootloader, so dont worry about that.

To root my i9300 i used this guide
How to Root Any Samsung Galaxy S3! [AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon/Sprint/SGH-T999D/GT-i9300] - YouTube
Very easy to understand, and also i think you download clockworkmod at the same time. Just have a look at it before you start the process.

Once you finished rooting i would reccomend getting Titanium Backup Paid version.
Backup your backup to anywhere on your internal or external sd card. Then once you done that i will tell you the next steps later. :D First root your phone. :D

you gotta go aokp :) im currently using rootbox by Bajee which is great - also bigfoot by Drew is good too - then there is carbon or revolt....... :D

There's one called PAC man aswell, which I've got my eye on, that uses all the features of AOKP, CM and PA. Looks pretty good tbh!

Hi there
I am similar situation as OP, would really appreciate advise on installing ROM.
BTW am already rooted and have CWM and superSU installed. I used this cf-root if that is important.

few quick questions,
1) if i upgrade to 4.2.2 can i revert back to my 4.1.2 nandroid backup ?
2) i take lot of pictures with phone and really like samsung camera , how about these ROM camera apps ?
3) stock touchwiz allows video calls ,any of these ROM support them
4) i use navigation quite a bit too hope no issues here ?
5) I assume i dont loose my current app store purchases.

Thanks for the advise. and really appreciate simple how to install guide.

current phone ver: 4.1.2 touchwiz
