Root [International] First time rooting

JonSick

Lurker
Read some of the guides here and I think this is a good path to go down. I'm happy with the process of actually rooting, but I'm confused as to what ROM I want to go for.

I have an S3 (GT-9300) and fed up of the Jelly Bean update having killed a lot of things off. Stuttering MP3s, iBolt kit no longer useful, horrendous battery life, etc...

In an nutshell, is there anywhere I can see what ROMs are available, with the differences between them, etc? Just looking for stability and non-stupid things?

I would personally recommend InsertCoin which in my opinion is the best stock-like Jelly Bean ROM. It doesn't really have any frills or experimental stuff and is effectively just an improved version of the stock ROM with only under the hood changes, not visual (although you can customise it a bit in the Aroma installer when you first flash it. If you are looking for themed ROMs there are plenty of those too:))

If you're interested, I have come across a way of making the battery life slightly better on JB if you use Google Now.
If you go to Maps > Settings > Location Settings and turn Location Reporting off, this will stop Google Now from wakelocking the phone constantly and draining the battery quicker :)

I've been reading the post on Insert Coin and it seems to be something I want to try out.

Sorry if these are noob questions (they are, really!).

- If my provider (O2) pushes out an over the air update with a "better" implementation of Jelly Bean, can I upgrade direct? Or will I need to reflash with a stock ROM? Or what's the story there?

- Can I still continue to use Kies for backup purposes, etc?

- Will my iBolt start working again (primary reason for change)

- If InsertCoin works out great for me, do these devs have some sort of donation thang going on?

Thanks!

Dont accept updates from O2. It will break root and possibly your ROM too. Simply keep up to date with the latest custom roms (which are better anyway)

Should be able to continue using keys for backups, although what do you backup? With root there are much better backup options available.

I believe dock support is from the kernel. I am not sure what kernel comes with InsertCoin to be honest, I don't use docks so I am not sure which custom Kernels support it

InsertCoin uses the stock kernel, but I've tried Siyah and Perseus and they both work great too :) (but not sure if they support docks as SU says)

Regarding the donating, on the right of this page - Donors | InsertCoin ROMs there is an option to donate

Can I also add to disable software update in application manager. It does seem to be a bit hit and miss though. There are two apps only one of them will actually disable though but it does the job. There have been a few times people say neither disable though so if not just use an app instead. If you've got the paid version of titanium it does it but a good free alternative is app quarantine. It will save the constant question of do you want to update:)
