Root [International] How well does Triangle away work for you?

SUroot

Extreme Android User
I'm a bit confused. Previously my flash counter has always been 0 since the first time I used TA. I never used the "reset counter on boot" option.

Sent my phoen away for repair. It came back motherboard repaired. I put the same ROM and Kernel on it and now I have to reset the counter on every boot otherwise it is always 1.

If I check in download mode it is also 1 until it resets again. I have the red exclamation mark on teh boot splash every time... I don't think this will help me from a warranty perspective in the future. I've seen videos where it boots into anotehr environment but I dont have that. It just says its reset and it shows as 0 until I boot.

I read somewhere in the xda thread / play that sometimes booting with a custom recovery or kernel would cause this but I have teh same of everything now as I did before.

So how well does it work for you? I'm on JB by the way.

Ah ok. So Samsung changed how this flash counter is written.

I found someone who had a fix to flash sboot from an ICS ROM and then it stays reset:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32372085&postcount=18

So I guess since I had ICS initially (and officially) before my phone was repaired this worked but since getting it back from repair with JB official on it, this happened. makes sense I guess.

Much better fix than downgrading to ICS official first then rooting...

Why bother ? If you got warranty issues either a. Your phone is completely bricked or b. It is still working but still needs repair.

In case of #a - surely Samsung wouldn't be able to tell if it was flashed or not if you can't even switch it on ?

And in case of #b - couldn't you simply reset counter / boot into download mode and flash stock rom / factory reset and you are done and ready for warranty repairs ?

Broken USB socket? Boots. Cant flash. Flash counter not 0 = You sincerely ******!

Corrupt NAND. Partially boots. Can't flash. Flash counter not 0 = You sincerely ******!

Why risk it?

Sod it - tried it myself now.

1. Rooted and leaked 4.1.2 installed.

2. Run Triangle Away

3. Booted into download mode
- displays
Custom Binary: N
Current Binary: Official
System Status: Official

4. Rebooted

5. Phone still rooted

6. About > Status > Device Status > Modified

7. Booted into download mode again
- displays again
Custom Binary: N
Current Binary: Official
System Status: Official

So I have to assume that Triangle Away works for me with leaked 4.1.2 on International S3 Garnet Red / Sim Free bought in the UK.

That said - the leaked ROM was also an official ROM, which is probably why this works.

So even if JB itself says it is modified, the counter is 0 - that is all what matters. :)

I'm not sure what or why you're testing...

The problem is that certain custom things (for me its the kernel I use) will rewrite the flash counter on every boot using a jb sboot, where as when starting from an ICS sboot, it never did (and again now, does not).

I received my phone initially on ics so when I initially rooted, I had an ics sboot, no matter what custom rom version I flashed.

When I received it back from repair, it was factory flashed with jb so then had a jb sboot.

I'm not sure if the leak you use flashes an sboot or not. Its not really relevant. For those whom start with a factory flashed jellybean and have this issue, they have an answer.

So your real test would be...

Flash an official jb (not leaked) to mimick factory flash jb, root, flash custom rom and kernel (preferably Siyah) and see what happens.

Fyi, with my original ics sboot, my counter was always 0, no matter what I flashed, so until you guaranteed having jb sboot, all tests are useless

I tested it to see if I am having the same issues - I don't care about custom roms as I am fine with stock - leaked or otherwise. Your question was "How well does Triangle away work for you" - hence me testing and answering :) - so no, my counter does not go up with Triangle away and it sticks at 0.

So clearly the issue with the counter is using a custom rom ..

So bottom line is (I guess) - if worried, use a stock rom rooted :)

...or use the fix...if you want a good kernel ;)

I think that is it really - I am not missing anything, I don't have a slow device, never crashes - The only reason I rooted even was because I was sick of some adverts in games which are sometimes impossible to close (like the "x" is so tiny or whatnot) so I wanted to change the hostfile and Titanium Backup obviously.

But yea - apart from that I am happy ;-)

Yep. Use of things like custom kernels is subjective and importance varies from user to user. I held off on 4.1.1 leaks until siyah kernel was jb compatible as the kernel is very important to me. The stock kernels are perfectly fine for most people. I'm a tweak junkie

Thats gonna shom my flash count?
U ok bro? Seem bit down 2day/night :(

Go to download mode (use power menu in your custom ROM or power down and restart pressing volume down + home button + power button simultaneously) and then on the first screen press volume up button once then look in top left-hand corner above the green android. ;)

You can do that, but the problem with the latest sboots is you can reset the counter, boot download mode and it be "0" then boot android and it is 1 again, so I prefer Triangle away from within Android as the counter will already have triggered by this point.

Since we now believe the XXELLA sboot does not address the Sudden Death issue, I would recommend people try the ICS sboot as per post 2 of this thread if flash counter is a worry.
