Root [International] I'm in deep doodoo!

Hi guys, the title says it all! I flashed a few roms recently, but didnt really feel that excited about them, so kept reinstalling my nandroid backup. So far so good. Anyway, I came across another rom that looked worth a try, "Imperium". So went through the usual process of downloading it to my phone, etc, etc, and started the installation. And thats where my problems began! The customisation choices that you have to make are huge! Theres a page of selection choices for just about every aspect of the installation, and I guess I made a few wrong choices. When everything was done, and the phone rebooted.......it didnt! It just got to the Samsung logo, and sat there flashing at me. So, after a while, I rebooted it and exectly the same thing happened.
I rebooted into recovery, and tried to install the nandroid backup, but it told me there were no files found!
I can get into recovery and download mode ok, but thats it.
Ive tried flashing a stock rom using different Odin versions, but it gets stuck at either "setup connection" or " Writing Nand" at least something like that.
Ive tried installing a zip file from sideload, but it just wont play ball, I think, mainly because I dont understand the instructions well enough.
So thats where I am basically. I am also not at home, but house sitting at my daughters,(hence deciding to play with my phone) but have a laptop,(hers) and a usb cable with me.
My last hope seems to be to try and install a zip rom from an external sd card, which I have at home.
Ive obviously wiped all the files off the internal sd card ( I guess) by ticking a wrong choice during the Iperium rom setup choice procedure.
Can anyone give me hope? Like "Ah, just do this and this, and all will be well"? I'm all out of ideas, apart from the external sd card method.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Dave

Whoa, that stinks:(
Yeah, apart from flashing a rom from an external sd card, I'm not sure either.
What recovery do you have?
There has got to be a way to mount the internal memory in recovery, so that you can move a rom to it via the computer. But alas, I have not found a way yet (I use TWRP).

You mention, "Ive tried installing a zip file from sideload, but it just wont play ball, I think, mainly because I dont understand the instructions well enough.". Do you have a link to the instructions? Perhaps I can take a look-see at them too:)

Rest assured that as long as you can get into recovery, or even download mode, all is not lost;)

Hi Mike, and thanks for getting back to me so promptly. I have CWM recovery. Let me find a link for that sideload thing.........well, to be honest, there are so many on google, I've lost count of how many I've looked at, they all seem to say the same thing, but I seem to get lost somewhere along the way. Theres a youtube video about second one down on google, but again, he loses me partway through. See what you think. Thanks.
Dave

No problem
I'm about to go mobile so I'll check back later Ok?
Sorry I gotta leave ya hanging like that.
When you say sideload, is that a way to get the rom on your internal memory via recovery then flash it?

In short, Sideload is a way of getting a rom or another file in zip form from pc to phone via recovery. I had trouble finding a rom file that was in .tar md5 to use with Odin, and sideload would have a been an easier way. IF I could get it to work!
Dave

So when you flashed the rom did it have an 'aroma installer",. A list of options before the flash?
What I'd personally do is get home and put a rom and gapps on your sd card and flash from that.
If you want a good rom suggestion I flashed an excellent one last night. I'll upload it for you if you want?
I've never heard of that rom you flashed and I tend to stay clear unless I know the dev or a few friends have flashed it.

What kind of options were in the aroma? If modem is a choice then that could be what's caused the soft brick. Fixing the modem could be harder so I hope it's not that.
Phone definitely isn't dead though, it's just in a coma :beer:

Hi FL, yeah it was the aroma, a whole shed load of options, including a page of modems. I remember whatever modem I chose, the next page warned me about this that and the other' so I was damned if I did, and damned if I didnt, so to speak. A list of kernels too!
Thanks for the encouraging last sentence!:):thrasher:

You should be cool mate but if its the modem, id try n odin back to stock i think. Custom roms dont include a modem (other than that crazy shit you flashed lol.

Unless anyone knows of a list of flashable modems?

You dont remember what baseband (modem) you were on before do you mate?

OK, brilliant news! After hammering away with trying to flash an old stock rom with Odin, it suddenly decided to go in! I couldn't believe it, I was so suprised......and pleased:). Rebooted ok, signed into Google and got all my contacts and pics ok. But, I dont have any phone connection. Just a circle with a line through it on the notification bar. Ive taken the sim out and cleaned it, but still nada. I havnt tried Googling the problem yet, thought I'd share my good news with you guys first.
It's Android version 4.0.4 btw.
Anyway, I'm sure its fixable. Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.
Any suggestions as to my remaining problem gratefully received!
Going to make a cup of tea to celebrate now!:dancing::dancing:

Curious now that you say you flashed a rom via ODIN, are you still rooted?

I had to use Odin, as it was the only way to get a file into my phone.
Nope, no longer rooted, but that won't be a problem.
Update! I updated to the latest official build, using Kies this morning, and I'm now on Android v4.3............AND, I have a phone signal, so it was obviously the modem:).
It's quite a bit different from v4.1.2, which what I had before I nearly destroyed it! Bit annoying that only some of my contacts have reappeared!
First priority is to root it, then I'll see what it's like to live with, with regards to a different rom.
All in all, I'd say it's a result!
Thanks everyone again:).

How old is the phone mate? If it's under 2 then flashing anything cool will void the warranty now but hey, it's better than running tooshjizz imo

So you gona root it with CF?
Just make a backup up of stock rom this time mate and don't wipe it lol.
Have a look at the roms available but I'm seriously impressed with this. Vanir Rom I just started using. It's just a great balance of speed stability and features

I forgot to ask, is your internal sd completely wiped? (no pics, titanium backups, nandroids, left on there? Have you had a search using an app like ES File Explorer?

Cr*p! So I downloaded cf root v6.4 and flashed it with Odin, and the damn thing stuck halfway through! I waited ages, and ended up unplugging phone, only to me greeted with an onscreen message saying that Kies update had failed and to choose recovery in Kies.....big help as Kies wouldn't see me phone at all in that state!
Managed to reboot into download mode and reflashed stock v4.0.4..............rooted that sucessfully, then flashed Cyanogenmod v10.2.
Great I thought, until I noticed that I have no network....again! modem xxle8.
Just downloaded another instance of same modem, and am about to flash that.....standby.

Can't find a downloadable modem different to the one I've got. Might end up flashing another rom.......tomorrow....night all.

Unlucky bud remember roms don't include modem.
Can you go into About Phone, Status and check the IMEI? Don't post it but does it say "null" or have a shitload of zeros?

I'm gonna look for some flashable modems incase it isn't the IMEI lost.
Ive been on same modem since my 1st custom rom.
Is yours an unlocked or network phone mate? Not sure if it matters.
Chat 2moz bro we'll get this sorted

IMEI is 00****0*0**0000, is that too many zeros?
I backed up the efs to my pc before I started all this palava:rolleyes:

Hmm, couldn't get to this page last night......Anyway, got phone back up and running, tried to get efs back into it but prog said it didnt work, grr, managed to install stock Sammy v4.3 and it booted and most things work now. But tried to root it with cf root v6.4, Odin said it worked, but it wasnt rooted!
After trying various methods, I researched a bit and discovered that the worst thing I could have done was to install v4.3, cos it nails something into your phone called 'Knox' which is a piece of clever 'security' by Samsung, designed to stop you rooting etc......I think.
So, ATM I have a working phone, except for email, which crashes as soon as I try to open mail, and can't root or think about flashing a different rom........apart from that, I'm over the moon!!
If anyone knows a fix for my dilemma, please feel free to enlighten me......thanks, Dave:rolleyes:

Don't worry bro. On the i9300, all Knox does is void your warranty. You can do anything you want still apart from downgrade to below 4.3.
It's the poor Verizon dudes who got the secure bootloader :D
So don't worry unless you need your warranty. Just find a good guide for rooting 4.3

Just find a good guide for rooting 4.3

I've tried so many different "guides" to root my phone, I'm going cross-eyed! None of which have worked. And to top it all, the last one I tried has wiped my recovery,or at least prevented me from booting into recovery! I think it was Rom Manager from Google play store. I opted to reboot into twrp, and then it just froze on me, and did so on every subsequent occasion, trying different options. So I'm really running out of ideas here. I notice FL, that in another post, you say that you wont be buying another Samsung phone, well, guess what, neither will I!:p

Rom manager (not to be confused with the excellent rom toolbox) shouldn't be used with s3s mate.
I think you wanna be looking for an odin way like CF Auto Root by Chainfire, a mega respected dev.
If I get a chance later I'll ask some peeps on g+ who have rooted the s3 recently. I was on 4.1 when I did it and haven't had it near a PC since lol.
Tbh I don't think the method has changed but the file you flash probably has
PS can u still get into download mode?
