Yeah... you're in the wrong forum for the Hobbit phone.
Joking apart, since you are on stock firmware with a CF-Auto-Root kernel, I am not surprised. However, the PhilZ recovery, "may", prove a problem if you actually try and install the OTA update. If you want it, I would recommend d/l'ing it and using Odin.

Yes I thought the same, however in the interests of research I will just update after uninstalling SU (which is known to cause problems when updating and flashing stock).

I want to know if you fare better than Syd, when he tried the same thing at home!

There may be a way to make the stock recovery a flashable tar or even better zip, file. So in future those on stock, rooted running their mods and choice of custom recovery could be able to take an OTA and not have to reset up the phone (I was amazed when I updated my sisters SGSIII OTA and all her folders, home screens etc stayed put). Hopefully it will work like this :
Phone helpfully tells you there is an OTA. You uninstall SU, flash the stock recovery reboot and then take the OTA, re root, reinstall your custom recovery and a Bob is your maiden Aunty so to speak.
It may or may not be as simple as that (simple. Ha! extracting the recovery from a tar.md5, making it a flashable tar or zip itself. Then having it work), but I intend to try with the help of Scarey Alien who has offered his services.

Surly all you really need to do though is just flash the stock rom over the top and re Root/ flash custom recovery? It is in essence doing the same thing your trying and should all still be non wipe?
Obviously both option may still cause problems that occur when updating without a wipe..... or am i looking at it too simply?

This is what I'm trying to do. I'm hoping since an OTA is for your ordinary user and they take an OTA and usually things are as they were previously, but with new firmware I'm going to take OTA's (which appear to flash the changed bits of the OS only - stock 4.4 firmware .tar.md5 is 2.6gig for my Note 3 and the OTA is 320meg) and hopefully do away with Odin PC, be able to do an OTA on the fly, re root and reinstall a custom recovery in minutes and still have my phone at up as how I like it. Doing away with wipes. - look it's a dream that may come off, don't laugh

Just wondering how you intend to re-root and install a custom recovery without using Odin?

Yes a small flaw in my plans.
In fact rather a large one! Plan B - download the firmware, use Odin, reroot, reinstall custom recovery and forget my incoherent rambling madness.

PLAN D: Have lots of beer, phone for a taxi drunk, decided it is your phone that is acting up and your obviously not drunk (one of my haunts has no signal, still, at all) and try and flash new modems at 1.30am pissed as a newt out of pure alcohol induced "it seemed like a good idea at the timeness" Wake up six hours later head on keyboard phone in boot loop, kebab stuck to face and in keyboard.

That was the part i wasn't quite getting. Lol
Figured your going to have to reroot etc using computer so why not just flash stock.
However i completely get wanting to use the much smaller file
Plan E, cut back on whatever you've been smoking and stick to tried and trusted methods ;-)
Seriously though, I'm sure on my nexus 7, when i went from 4.1 to 4.2 i used voodoo to unroot (well hide/preserve root) remove recovery using some other app (i think, it is quite some time ago) flash ota, boot back into voodoo,reroot and restore/flash a recovery, never having to use a computer at all!
However i don't think it works going to 4.3 (i just went for a custom rom anyway) or 4.4 (I've not actually flashed anything 4.4 yet, funnily enough one of the points of getting a nexus was to get updates first! Lmao)
