international prefix dialling

Hi, I have a new Motorola Razor Maxx from Verizon and have transferred all my contact from previous phone and I have a problem dialling the phone numbers stored in my contacts with theprefix '+' for international telephone numbers. The phone doesnt recognise the + sign and requires the 011 prefix instead. This prefix is different in other contries so is there a workaround for this problem so I dont have to edit my contacts every time i travel to a foreign contruy?
