You may have to install either the latest CM11 or get a 4.4 touchwiz rom on it first.
I would also ensure you have the latest recovery (Philz, whatever you use) installed before attempting anything.
Also do a nandroid backup and backup your EFS folder with Hckt tool from playstore (make sure to copy the EFS backup to your PC as well)
The reason some devs need you on a higher version of Android first is because of the file structure changes that came with KK.

See no reason why not......Couple of things to note; it recommend you use latest philz touch recovery and as I said you do a nandroid and EFS folder backup.
It's almost impossible to brick the S3 (almost); I've had some scarey moments....wiped my EFS folder; tried to install a Verizion US ROM (soft bricked device) so you should be ok.
