Root [International] [rooted] Another HTC One boot loop

TXjames

Newbie
Oh great Phandroid,
I write today seeking the help of your infinite wisdom in my dreadful condition...

I have an HTC One purchased when it was first rolled out in the US. I rooted it shortly after, using Scotty85's method found here: The HTC One root thread. (Thank you Scotty85!) Which means I flashed a TWRP recovery (openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7) and rooted with SuperSU. As you know, this is a very old flavor of Android and I haven't messed with it since.

At some point in time I believe I lost root access; I'm guessing due to normal updating of SuperSU. Which also means I do not have a current Titanium backup. :( This morning I updated a bunch of apps (one of them SuperSU and a bunch of other non-root related apps). Not much later the phone froze so I rebooted and found myself in a boot loop. The phone would continue boot all the way to where I could enter my PIN and get my home screen/Sense feed but then initiate the reboot sequence shortly after.

I was able to boot into TWRP and perform a backup. Then I proceeded to troubleshoot the bootloop. The last thing I tried was placing the phone in Safe Mode (by holding down power button and then holding shutdown until I got the Safe Mode option) to see if it would halt the bootloop. Not only did it not halt the bootloop, I now cannot get out of safe mode which means I also cannot enter twrp recovery. :pound:

Someone please tell me there's hope and recommend some steps to get my phone back! TIA :help:

well your still on android 4.1.2 ? Wow

To start hold the power button + vol down for about 45 seconds... let go of power but continue to hold volume down. You should now be back in the bootloader - Fastboot USB (if your hooked to your PC).

you now need to update your recovery as it's very old
get TWRP 2.6.3.3 here > Techerrata Downloads - Browsing m7
Flash it

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader

your phone should boot up now .. but i would advise finding a newer firmware and rom update soon.

This would also be an excellent time for you to get s-off
check out Rumrunner / Firewater

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I've been looking for a response all day. I did realize that I can still get into bootloader (as you mentioned) and I tried wiping the cache with TWRP to no avail. In fact, I was just snapping pictures of all my apps in preparation for a TWRP factory reset wipe. UGH! Thank you for saving me from myself!

I've been wanting to do Google edition ROM anyway and definitely get up to Kit Kat. But I'll settle for getting back to where I was when I woke up this morning (for the short term).

Just curious... Why 2.6.3.3 and not an even newer version?

the newer versions have different issues / bugs if you will .. just stick to the 2.6.3.3 and you'll be fine.

you have to get s-off for the GPE roms - do you have an AT&T phone ?

So I flashed TWRP 2.6.3.3. No luck. I'm still stuck in the bootloop.

Sorry you may have to wipe your data (factory reset in TWRP) and flash a new rom. do you know how to sidelaod a rom from your pc ?

Unlock the bootloader at HTCDEV
then from fastboot USB
Flash recovery TWRP 2.6.3.3
Techerrata Downloads - Browsing m7ul

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader

then sideload this Rom to your phone
http://www.androidrevolution.org/dow...D-One_31.6.zip

TWRP / Advanced / ADB Sideload - swipe to sideload
From PC adb / fastboot folder
you use
adb sideload name-of-rom.zip

make sure the rom is in the same folder as adb / fastboot

Sideload a rom? That's a good one clsA. I already strained my brain flashing the recovery. :D This is going to be a real hand holding experience. Sorry.

lol I just went through all this a couple hours ago

I updated to Android 4.4.3 KitKat | Sense UI 6.0 including the new firmware 6.06.401.1

It involved the same steps as above

Ooooohhh! Where do I get that (Android 4.4.3 KitKat | Sense UI 6.0)?!!!

Why do I have to do the HTCDEV bootloader thing again? I thought that was a one time thing. BTW, I did not do that prior to flashing the recovery. Does that mean I did screw it up?

no your fine ...the instruction are for starting from scratch
if you unlocked your fine.

download the above rom and get it sideloaded and try and get s-off before going any further

TWRP / Advanced / ADB Sideload - swipe to sideload
From PC adb / fastboot folder

Just to be clear (and since my download is taking so long)...
After I swipe to sideload the phone is waiting for input from ADB?
So I swipe then type
adb sideload Andriod_Revolution_HD-One_31.6.zip
?

the important thing to pick up from all this... is flash something compatible with your current firmware, then achieve s off before moving forward. it may not be possible once youve updated. youre also stuck with signed firmware packages while s on.

youre also stuck with signed firmware packages while s on.

For others who may run into this thread thread and are as green as me... Here's a good read on S-OFF: Android Revolution HD | Do we really need S-OFF?

One other (and most important) question before I dive in head first: Can I recover my data and if so HOW?!!! Will there be any opportunity for me to browse the filesystem and pull the files off manually? Or can I retrieve them from a backup (i.e. TWRP backup and not Titanium since that ship has sailed)? Or...???

EDIT: Spoke too quickly there. I realized that before sideloading a rom I need to do a TWRP wipe data which will only wipe "user data from the phone, including your installed apps, cache, and dalvik cache" and "not effect the internal or SD card storage area of your phone, meaning your documents, downloads, pictures, music, videos and other files". Quotes taken from Addictive Tips | What Is TWRP Recovery & How To Install & Use It

Then hopefully after wiping the /data partition I will have access to my filesystem and can do a Titanium backup and pull off files manually. I hope.

I was able to TWRP factory reset (Massive THANKS to clsA). Then I manually pulled the directories I need, installed SuperSU v2.00, Root Checker, Titanium Backup and ran a backup. I was also able to launch into the Android Revolution installer with sideload. However, I'm concerned about causing problems since I've installed apps after the factory reset. Does anyone know if I need to do another wipe? Or should I just go ahead with the install?

UPDATE:

S-OFF!!!

I ended up doing another factory reset just to be safe. Then prepared my machine for Rumrunner installation. You _must_ follow all the guidelines and disable AV and firewall as I discovered.
