Root [International] Rooted phone (no custom ROM) can't update via Kies

I have a Galaxy S III I9305 that I rooted and removed some apps and replaced some stock apps with others (like touch wiz is replaced with Nova, Samsung email client replaced with ASOP email, etc...).

The other day I plugged my phone into my computer and Kies said there was a firmware update. I didn't update then because I didn't have time to. Today I decided to update and when I plugged into my computer Kies said that "your device does not support software upgrading via kies".

The phone was rooted the other day when kies said it could up date, I didn't change anything to the phone except I restored a clockwork mod backup (the backup is also rooted).

I used Triangle away and the the bootloader says:
Product name: GT-I9305
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung official
System Status: Custom

I guess I have two questions here. The first is how can I get the firmware update (and preferably keep my root status).

Second question is do I really need this update? I don't remember what firmware version the new one is, but the one I am running now is:
Model Number: GT-I9305
Android Version: 4.1.1
Baseband version I9305ZHALI2
Kernel version:
3.0.31-177985
se.infra@SEP-85 #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 20 23:04:05 KST 2012
Build Number:
JRO03C.I9035ZHALI7

Thanks.

I agree that custom roms are way better than stock. But right now Cyanogenmod doesn't have a rom for the i9305 yet, so I figured I'd just keep the stock kernel for now and remove any trace of touchwiz or stock samsung apps.

Cm features really lack compared to samsung. You lose loads of functionality. I was refering to samsung based custom ROMs. All you need to do is put the launcher of your choice on...

I just love all the stuff like swipe to screen shot, put to face to dial, smart stay etc. Couldn't go back to not having it now

I can't recommend as I have the i9300. I can have a look tomorrow to see if I can find something that looks good though, although before time now

You haven't changed your modem by any chance? I had this problem once with kies, I had a different modem in than the one that came with the firmware and kies wouldn't let me update. I swapped back and bingo!

Have you considered just doing a manual flash using Odin? Assuming you can flash firmwares for the GT-I9305

I probably can do that, but I don't know where to download the official kernel (other that via kies). I looke don Samsung's site, but no luck.

If you download the full firmware then it should include an official kernel.

Again its this way for the I9300, it should be pretty similar for yours.

Looking on Sammobile heres all the firmwares that have been gathered for the I9305:

Im really unsure which one you should use, i would say the Hong Kong version (I9305ZHALI8) as the codes match up but i wouldnt take my word, im just a Noob myself :)

Yeah, I'd assume that I'd use the Hong Kong version as well. When I first booted up my phone the default language was Japanese (or Korean), and I'm pretty sure that my phone came form Hong Kong originally (but was shipped to me from Texas).
