Root [International] Samsung S3: Red exclamation,Rooting misstep

Hi,

Model:Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300
Carrier: 2 Degrees (New Zealand)

I have today attempted my first root of my phone. The S3 battery drain was driving me mad so off I went.

I tried to follow instructions on how to do it but the ones I ended up following must have assumed the user had already installed CWM.

I therefore missed this step and went straight to attempting to install CM10 via odin3-v1.85. Once that had installed I realised my mistake and re-installed the stock firmware. I got into recover mode and, I did a factory reset and everything seemed to be fine. I then tried to reinstall CWM to resume my root, but once doing so i attempted to get into CWM recovery mode but instead I got the S3 boot screen with a red exclamation in the top corner.

Please advise how I can get rid of the exclamation mark and complete a successful root.

Thanks

I attempted to root using Odin, and loading the Cyagoenmod 10 ROM. However I missed off the first step of putting Clockwork Mod Manager on first. I therefore tried to load CM10 through the standard recovery menu using install from SD card.

after my initial attempt at the root, i have reflashed the stock firmware, which is working fine, can get into download & recovery screen. however when i try to install CWM, it will install, but when i try to get into the CWM recovery screen i get the Samsung Galaxy screen along with the red exclamation mark.

Rewind a bit bro. Youre going too fast :)
The first thing you wana do is follow this great guide to flashing CF-Root
http://www.androidnz.net/2012/06/at-your-own-risk-how-to-root-your.html?m=1
This will root your phone and install Clockwork Mod recovery.
Then go into clocwork (CWM) and make a full backup of the phone.
Then start flashing roms etc.
Dont even think about flashing anything until youve done this because youre moving so fast that youre gona end up soft bricking the phone.
Let me know if you need help with the CF-Root process

As funky said, you need to slow down. Doing things without research will end up making a paper-weight of your phone, with a voided warranty, void insurance, and no way back.

Use CF-Root and get yourself rooted and CWM running. Check CWM is working, and make a Nandroid backup:

- Boot to CWM
- Choose backup/restore
- Backup

This makes a snapshot of your current ROM, so you can flash this and get back to this point if you get stuck in a boot loop or anything. This has saved my a*s on at least one occasion.

Once you've got your backup, save it somewhere on your Mac/PC. You can backup via CWM to the external SD card which is preferable. Internal storage is often wiped by ROMs on install.

To flash CM:

- Drop the zip you get from their site onto your internal SD
- Double check you've got the ROM specifically for the i9300
- Download the latest GApps zip file (important)
- Put this in same place as CM zip for ease
- Enter CWM
- Wipe cache
- Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
- Main menu
- Install zip from sdcard
- Choose the CM zip and let it run
- Immediately flash the GApps zip
- Now do a data wipe/factory reset
- Reboot

I don't think CM will solve battery problems though - it seems to be quite a drain for many people. Worth trying nevertheless.

Yeah samsung based roms still seem to be the best for battery life. Mine dropped by over 10% when i moved to aosp based :)

By any chance are you using ROM Manager to flash CWM? Not sure if it's still the case, but I know it's caused havoc with Samsung devices in the past.
BTW, I really prefer TWRP, and it's a cinch to flash using the app goo.manager. :)
