Hello,

A few questions about rooting the One X.

1.) Has anyone else done it and if so what Custom ROM's have you used?
2.) Does it make the phone better?
3.) Are you still able to use the Sense 4.0 widgets?
4.) Will I still get over the air updates from HTC?
5.) How do I do it and what do I need?

Sorry for the questions but a complete noob when it comes to Android (ex-iphone Jailbreaker!!)

I can tell you if you root your phone you will not get OTA updates, rooting has loads of advantages though.
Personally i would wait till a way of rooting is available without using HTCdev site.
I rooted my old Desire & will root my One X when a way is found that also includes S-Off.

Hello,

A few questions about rooting the One X.

1.) Has anyone else done it and if so what Custom ROM's have you used? Yes. eXoDiZeD and Leedroid.
2.) Does it make the phone better? Yes.
3.) Are you still able to use the Sense 4.0 widgets? If you flash a Sense based ROM then yes, otherwise no.
4.) Will I still get over the air updates from HTC? No.
5.) How do I do it and what do I need? Read the root thread here.

What is wrong with using the HTCdev site? What's the difference between S-on and S-off and why does it matter?

A few questions about rooting the One X.

1.) Has anyone else done it and if so what Custom ROM's have you used?

Yes, it's really easy if you follow the instructions, it just looks a bit daunting but it's not really, personally I think this is the best ROM out there.

2.) Does it make the phone better?

Yes, you get a lot of extra features, better battery life, quicker updates, bugs are fixed a lot quicker.

3.) Are you still able to use the Sense 4.0 widgets?

As said above, if you flash a Sense ROM then you can, it'll be no different than being Stock, in terms of how the phone functions, apps, widgets etc.

4.) Will I still get over the air updates from HTC?

No, but this is better because you don't have to wait ages for HTC or your carrier to release them, you'll get updates long before they're released.

5.) How do I do it and what do I need?

In the link I gave you above, in the 4th post there is all the information you need to root your phone and flash the custom ROM.

Sorry for the questions but a complete noob when it comes to Android (ex-iphone Jailbreaker!!)

Once you root it and flash a custom ROM you'll wonder why you never did it sooner!

It is a pain not having S-OFF but it's unlikely that will come anytime soon though, although the only benefits are being able to flash different radios and having the newest hboot (there are ways around it though), although it's still worth rooting without being able to change these.

There's nothing wrong with the HTCdev.com site, personally it couldn't be simpler to use.

Lol, Ok I have read the thread and I am struggling on the HTCdev site with the android SDK... Guess i'll just stay stock!!

The HTCdev instructions seem to be written for a windows based computer... I'm on a Mac

What is wrong with using the HTCdev site? What's the difference between S-on and S-off and why does it matter?

When you use the HTCdev site to unlock your boot loader then you void your warranty, regardless of if its a hardware fault that occurs afterwards.
You need S-Off to get full root access.
That's why i am waiting for the devs on xda to come up with a solution like they always seem to, then if you get a fault you can unroot & get the phone fixed under warranty.

I basically get to Step 12 on the HTCdev bootunlocker and when I place this command into terminal on Mac,

/Users/PaulKazz/Desktop/untitled\ folder/fastboot-mac flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

I get a message saying

error: cannot load 'Unlock_code.bin'

Can anyone help? This is the last stage for me to unlock the bootloader and I have managed to bumble my way through to this stage....

It sounds as though it can't find the unlock code file. Is it definitely in the directory you are typing in?

Yes I got the email with it attached, downloaded it and placed it straight into the same folder as the fastboot-mac file.

I thought it may be corrupt so I requested another unlock code, in fact I have now had 5!! And none of them work.

Also each time I use the command line

fastboot-mac oem get_identifier_mac

i get a different token... should this happen?

Sorry mate, that's me stumped now...

This is purely a guess, but I would've thought that you'd only get one unique identifier token per device, based on the serial number or something. So why it would keep generating different ones I really don't know. Sorry about that, perhaps someone else out there knows a bit more?

Agreed, I'm sort of stumped too. I was under the impression that the unlock_code.bin file/code was totally unique to your device.

Very odd... I guess the next thing to try is getting in touch with HTC perhaps?

Currently in an online chat with someone from HTC... will update in a minute

EDIT: They were very unhelpful, lol the person wasn't even away of the different fastboot file for windows mac and linux!! Basically they have said it is because I am using a MAC and not a windows PC... I pointed out why would they do the other fastboot files to which they replied they didn't know!!

I don't know if this will help as I'm not familiar with the OS X command line, but I've found a pretty comprehensive guide which is OS X specific here.

Perhaps if you read through the thread there might be something useful amongst it.

Finally finally got it to work... not sure what was wrong... just kept trying and eventually it unlocked!!

Now onto the next stage....

Definitely a custom ROM once I work out what I'm doing
I've just moved from stock to Android Revolution HD, which is a SENSE ROM with almost the same look / feel as stock, but with the benefits of being rooted. I'm very pleased I did.

Might migrate in a while to a more radical ROM !

Yeah that's what I am going for I think

Still not 100% sure what to do.... It says about putting the ROM you want to flash onto your.internal memory and not the SD card.... The One X does not have an SD card so not sure where to put it exactly

The virtual SD Card. Basically, connect the phone to your Mac and it should mount as an external drive, just drop the ROM.zip on there.

Have you flashed clockwork yet?

Just about to do it as been at work. What version should I be flashing of the clockwork mod?
