4. Extract boot.img from ROM zip and flash it using ‘fastboot flash boot boot.img’.
5. Use 'fastboot erase cache' to avoid boot issues.

Should I do those while the phone is running or in fastboot mode? I am assuming fastboot mode.

And

6. Go into recovery and install the ROM.
7. Please choose fullwipe if you are asked, highl recommended if you rom from another rom.

Wouldn't the full wipe remove the system (ROM) I just installed? Shouldn't I perform that beforehand?

EDIT: NVM, it is currently installing at 60%. I chose the "Custom" installation option rather than the full one but I didn't check/uncheck anything because I didn't want to mess around, I should have just chosen full installation instead, lol. Will let you know how it goes!

By the way, how do I update to the latest Viper version again?
 
You can go in and mess around later.

As a rule, it's always best to do full wipes when coming between ROM's, it just removes any trace of previous ROMs and ensures there's nothing left over to conflict with the new one.

Re the installation of OTA's, you can either go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Updates and it will do it automatically, or you can download the zip files jan has in the thread and do it yourself manually. You need to do it in order though, 2.6.x->2.7.0->2.7.1.

First boot can take a while btw.
 
Awesome. Doing a software update is much easier. Right now it is downloading it 2.6.0 - 2.7.0 and only 13MB!

Thanks a lot for all your help. I believe I'll be sticking to this ROM for a long time to come. It looks and feels much more professional than AOKP, in my honest opinion. And ugh.. my first impression about Sense was wrong, because it is awesome and certainly worthy of being HTC's pride. lol
 
Yeah, I am done configuring the phone and restoring all the applications and stuff. I also set Battery Juice to "aggressive", hopefully it'll make a difference.

I am tired of playing around with the device so I am going to take a look at Venom Hub later. I do like the current icon set, however there are a few that I'd like to change.
 
I am getting truly frustrated with my One X. I do not know if it's because I just installed a new ROM and it should take a day or two to become stable, but the battery life is horrendous and completely unacceptable for a device that cost that much.

What frustrates me is that it drops A LOT when in STANDBY, not just when I am using it. In fact it drops almost as much when it's in standby as it does when I am using it and this is truly weird. As I mentioned before, I was a long-time iPhone user and I know that touch-screen devices use a lot of power but no iPhone I have ever held used that much battery, and the last one was the 4S. But actually, the iPhone didn't use much if any power while in standby mode (as in screen off and stuff).

Is there something I should do? I even installed Juice Defender and set it to aggressive, but no use.

Is it because I am using, perhaps, a custom ROM? Should I revert back to stock, unroot, and relock the device in order for it to live longer? I don't get it.
 
Get rid of Juice Defender, I used it once on an older handset and found it had the complete opposite effect of what is used to. I know some have good experiences with it, but mine was terrible.

Custom ROMs are generally MUCH better on battery life than stock, so not sure what the deal is? I lose about 1% per hour connected to my home WiFi, about double that when using 3G. It might take a while to settle, so give it about 2-3 charge cycles before commenting.

Also worth Fixing Permissions (it might not help, but give it a go anyway). Boot back into clockwork, Advanced, Fix Permissions, Reboot.

If battery life is still terrible after a couple of days, we can see about installing a different kernel. :)

Incidentally, If you head to the battery usage screen, what does it say is eating your battery? Do you have Dropbox Sync enabled too?
 
Okay.. the battery is actually much worse than I thought. This cannot be normal, something's up.

Then I went to sleep and left it with screen off and everything inside its cover and this is the result 5+ hours later at 10:57 AM:

I just checked my Dad's Sony Xperia with Android I don't know what version on it and the battery use says it lasted 12 h 35m before the last charge and that the only thing that uses a lot of battery is the screen whereas the OS just like 20% or something.

Can you please help me return everything to stock on my phone? I'd like to unroot it, lock bootloader, and install the latest stock ROM from Google (the one with Sense, of course). If the battery life still sucks, then I am going to take it to HTC service center and see what's up with that. Or should I wait like you said? I don't want it to die on me in university tomorrow!
 
I don't have Drop Box sync enabled and the kernel on this custom ROM is actually the stock one. Viper's creator wrote "it is the most stable one therefore I prefer it".

By the way, what's the easiest way to choose between EDGE and 3G? I'd like 3G to be deactivated while I am at my house and use Wi-Fi instead, whereas use 3G when I am at university.
 
I followed your instructions and the outcome was beyond my expectations. The battery life is now awesome compared to how it was!

After a full recharge, the battery lasted 8h 49m 59s and was at 65%, and I actually used it a lot during that time.

I removed Juice Defender and fixed permissions and it made a HUGE difference. Now Android OS uses only a very small percentage of the battery, unlike when Juice Defender was installed; I am guessing the creator should be contacted about this - I am glad there was a trial period before I went ahead and purchased it, though.

Thanks, dude, and I'll keep you updated. Hopefully the battery will remain that good. It is now 2:00 AM and I just took the phone off the charger (100%) a couple of minutes ago, and I'll see how much it dropped when I wake up.
 
That's great, dude, it certainly is a wonderful ROM and much better than AOKP and/or the stock one. The only beef I had with it was the battery issue, but now that that is fixed, I'm absolutely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.

The battery has been outstanding so far!
 
I took your advice and used Titanium Backup to backup the System Data before I tried to install another ROM. I just re-installed ViperX and am waiting for it to load. lol
