Help internet crashing on Froyo

martyp

Newbie
FHi all,
After upgrading my browser seems to keep disappearing while surfing or coming up with a force close message. It's happening on various sites and I didn't have this before I upgraded. One example is when I did a Google search for pretty reckless then clicked on the shows link at the top. I tried dolphin and that did the same. On the shows page it just disappears when you click the link on the page.
I tried installing flash as per other threads but it says application not installed. I have also cleared and reset the browser settings and rebooted the phone.
Can anyone help at all please?

Sorry to see you're having browser force closes, martyp.

I'd try going into the application manager and clearing data and cache both in the browser you're using. Sometimes it's even worth the trouble to uninstall then reboot and reinstall the browser.

In addition, you may want to be sure you do not have a lot of syncing going on in the background. Sometimes the Facebook, gmail, weather, etc apps will try to sync pretty close to the same instant and that can at least slow things down and sometimes cause app/phone crashes. Setting those things to sync manually can remedy that issue.

The main thing, though, is to start over with the browser, if it's the only app crashing. Some users have much better luck with Dolphin HD than the stock browswer.. ymmv. ;)

Hi Frisco,
Thank you for the advice. I did try going into all the browser settings and clearing cache/cookies/forms etc, also through Settings -> Applications and cleared all data that way (lost all bookmarks etc) but still have the same problems.
I never had any issues with 2.1, it seems to just crash to desktop so often now. I open the browser back up and it goes to the home page but I can usually get back to where I was through the history. It crashed again a minute ago after just doing a simple google search and clicking on a result for Wiki answers. Nothing that complex I would have thought?
I did consider even doing a factory reset but I fear doing this as it's difficult restoring everything back again. I can't seem to find any mention of flash in the applications list now as well?
Sync'ing may be a factor but then the only thing I have sync'd is Gmail and weather, I have facebook/stocks switched off. I might test manual sync to see what happens...
I've downloaded Dolphin and also Opera as alternatives, although Dolphin seem to crash out the same when I accessed one page I had trouble with the same as the normal browser. I wonder if it's flash that's causing the problem as a plugin? I also read about javascript being an issue. My previous phone was a Nokia N95 and that used to crash out on ebay unless javascript was turned off.

Just an update on this...
As it kept happening I decided to first try clearing all internet browser data and restore it to default settings. That didn't work at all, I also cleared all data from HTC Flash player but still just as bad.
So I did a full factory reset and wiped the lot. I just opened the browser (no settings etc just my wifi connection, not even google accounts etc) and first tried going to The Pretty Reckless | Official Site and clicking on the Shows link at the top. The browser just disappeared as it did before.
I then did some browsing on ebay and after a short while got an unexpected error in the browser and force close message...
I think the software is buggy if a factory reset doesn't even fix it...
I've put the query to HTC but now have the nightmare of putting all my stuff back on the phone :(

I have a Samsung infuse with the exact same issue. My dolphin browser will crash and then android tells meits not installed when I click the icons to relaunch. I just switched from years of being an iPhone customer. I also have dolphin for iPhone and ipad. After switching from the Motorola atrix to this, I have worries about OS stability. Any utilities you guys recommend?
