internet only phone

is there anywhere that I can use a phone - NOT a tablet - with internet (3g or 4g) service and wi-fi only. without using phone service or having a phone contract?
Where can I purchase such a device?
The closest I found is an add-on device that Virgin Mobile makes for the iTouch. It is a "case" that snaps onto the back of the iTouch that allows up to 500mb per month at $20.00
any other suggestions?

Get a MiFi. It's like a pocket WiFi router that receives 3g, & gives it you over WiFi. I connect my ipod to it. It's also rechargeable via its USB socket / charger. Any device that has WiFi can connect to it, & as it's a proper router it is password protected.

It comes in handy if in a place with weak signal, you can place it somewhere higher up (like, upstairs...) & connect over it's WiFi.

who sells a phone without a voice plan? just 3g/4g
what i am trying to do is to use Google voice to forward calls to Skype or some other internet based phone service.

What would happen if you purchased a data only plan “for a tablet” and put the simcard into a phone. My suspicion is that you would have exactly what the OP is after. Anybody have the components to do a test.

Not sure where you live, but here in my country, I can buy a phone or use my old one and get a SIM only data contract and slap that into a phone.

i live in the US - Massachusetts. I currently use Virgin Mobile pay-as-you-go service. I am not familiar with the SIM only data contract. who sells this?

I guess we have some pretty good options in India ...and I'm presuming the previous poster is an Indian...there are no carrier locked devices sold out here...everything is sim-free...and you can choose to subscribe to only data...without a voice plan..or vice versa..to each his own ...data rates are pretty cheap...for e.g..I use a 3g plan with a 3gb cap...and I pay INR 850...or ~18 a month...plus they keep throwing away double data promotions for the same price off and on...so all-in-all, pretty good...we still don't have LTE or 4G here, but given the flexibility of changing handsets at will, and the lack of contract shackles, its a happy place to be in :)

Not sure about the US, but I know many carriers in many countries offer pre-paid and contract data only SIM cards(no voice minutes), that are intended for USB 3G modems. Put one of these in your phone, should work just fine.

Actually I'm in the Philippines. I have a data plan that costs roughly $25 a month, full unlimited including tethering. I sometimes tether over 2GB a day to my laptop with no problem, especially when I'm uploading or downloading lecture videos.

The norm here is buying phones direct from shops, so we have a lot of Samsung/Nokia/Sony concept stores here, actual stores by the manufacturers. Even the prepaid/pay-as-you-go SIMs here have a data cap of 1GB per day for $1.

Yeah..exactly..out here in India, I can walk into a store..any store, buy a phone, pop in a sim, and I'm up..and an hour later, I can pop in a different sim from a different carrier, and the phone would automatically pick up apn settings and get me online...no sweat, no extra charge..of course..you gotta make sure you have the right data plan...Coz once you're beyond your limit (if there is one) the charges are crazy!!
