I would recommend the archos 70 or 101 internet tablets ARCHOS

not the 7 that you have linked to. It has a resistive screen and has poor reviews.
Its an older model and will have limited support now that the newer gen8 models are here.

If you have a mobile phone with android 2.2 on it you can use the handset as a wireless hotspot for the Archos. If not you may be able to teather your mobile to the archos via usb cable. both options should allow you to browse the net and access gmail.

I have the 101 16gb and so far It has exceeded my expectations in every way, its fantastic. Almost good enough that I dont have to boot my pc at all some evenings.

goodluck

Thank you, I was looking at those two, they're both top out of my budget but I guess its better to spend a little more budgeted then stay below and regret what I buy dew to its limits.
If I don't have a data plan from a provider I can still down load apps from sights like appslib via wifi right?

none of these tablets have a sim card slot and arent phones, they dont come with a data plan or contract.

you can usb/bluetooth tether (or wifi hotspot) them to your mobile phone to connect them to the internet though, or use free wifi hotspots in town or at home to access the web.

I think you answered this but I guess I want to be sure I'm asking clearly; an aquanced told me in an email:

I've been looking at these (archos tablets) as well. The only issue I see with them is that there is no carrier (i.e. AT&T, Verizon, etc). With that there is no access to Android Market.

Not true, right?

beerunner:

I have the Archos 70 8GB and it has the Android Market on it. You need to sideload it by installing a program called "gApps4Archos.apk" takes about 2 minutes to run then you're setup and ready to go..

The Archos line of tablets all have wifi AND will tether to any Android phone for use where wifi is unavailable.

If you need a good 7 inch or 10 inch tablet, I highly recommend the Archos line of products. They have a lot of unique features that make them hard to beat in the market right now...

The only thing I don't like on my 70, is the low-res video camera. But I don't use it anyway, so it's not a huge negative to me.

I have Google voice which is free calling and my next device this year will be an Archos 43. It works on the Archos 70 quite well but the 7 inch form is less than ideal for that purpose...

Hope that helps...
