Hi great forum I am about to get a HTC Hero and will find this site invaluable.One question is it possible for me to change my username as it is displayed on the forum??

No you will need to register under a new name ... but you may have to have your old ID cleared from the site ...
"private messgae" the Administrator PHASES and he will set you straight ...
