Help Introduction and problem

Lurker
Hello, new to tabbing. I apologize if this has been covered before, but I didn't find it in the search.

Just got a refurbed Galaxy Tab2 7 (android 4.2.2). Had it about 2 weeks. Seemed OK at first. First time I recorded a video, the only sound it made was a clicking (wife said it was "purring." Tried again a day or so later and sound was there.

Now, the thing makes NO sounds at all. None with video, nor with games or when touching the screen or any of the other times it should make one. I have checked and the volume for all of it is up to full (so I'm in for a shock if sound ever comes back on!). Videos also seem to play at double speed for some reason.

I've tried uninstalling a couple of apps I put on it, thinking maybe that caused it but that didn't work. I also haven't ruled out an I/O (idiot operator) problem, nor have I ruled out a hardware problem since it is a refurb. I HAVE NOT tried a factory reset yet. If anyone has any ideas, I'm listening.

Thanks.

Haven't heard of this problem before. Yeah, try the factory reset.
Hopefully, you're within the return period if that doesn't work. Let us know what happens.

I tried the factory reset and it still doesn't appear to be putting out sound. I have not reinstalled any of the apps that I had on it when the sound disappeared.

Also, and this was occurring before the reset, when I record a video and then try to play it back (mainly to check the sound), I get an error message that the video cannot be played (?!). Seems like if it was recorded with the tablet it ought to be able to play it.

In trying to check the sound, I inserted an SD card with some mp3s on it. When I tried to play one (the songs were displayed in the list), the tablet said it couldn't play that format, or some such message.

I'm beginning to think maybe the refurbishing didn't get it fixed as well as they thought.

Very frustrating.

Thanks for any help. DB

I'm leery of refurb'd tablets because I worry that the original owner may have tried to root the thing and borked it before returning it. Then, you have to hope that the refurber does more than a cursory exam of the unit. I don't know how thorough they are. An extended warranty is worthwhile in such situations. I know that doesn't help you though.

Is it just audio/video media problems that you've noticed? Have you tried using a different player app?

As a last resort and if you're adventurous, you might try and flash it back to 4.1.1 and see if that doesn't help. I've read more issues with 10" inch owners than the 7". Never tried it myself but lots of guides on the web.

It was supposedly "factory" refurbed, so I would hope they would check it pretty well.

Yes, it seems to be only AV issues, at least as far as I can tell. I didn't get a chance to fool with it much yesterday. I'll try some of the other things today and see what happens.

I assume trying different players would mean that I'd need to get some different apps than what's on the tablet? Any recommendations?

Not sure I'm adventurous enough to try flashing the OS backwards.

Thanks for the input.

I have QQ Player for videos. But you said you couldn't play .mp3s either. I have two delivered, Google Play Music and Media Player plus ES Media Play (from ES File Explorer). If you clear the default setting you might find others on your tab already. Can you get any audio, e.g., TuneIn Radio, iHeart Radio?
Can't remember if you need to after a factory reset, but have you tried clearing data/cache from the apps?

I'm not either. But that's what the kidz always recommend. Anyway, your problem doesn't seem to be a "normal" problem so I don't know what else to suggest. Maybe someone else has an idea.

It's from an old Senators (who?) program cover. ;)
