IP address

Recently started reading into ip stuff.
Basically want to know how and why you would change a ip address?
Using a widget on my phone. I have one that starts with 192.xxx.x.x
And another which is like 86.91.xx.xxx

When I search 'ip address' in Google I get the latter address.

I'm betting your phone tells you 192.168.X.X, right? That's because you essentially have two IP addresses. Your router has an enternal IP, which is your 86.91.x.x one and is how you're connecting to the internet. However, your router assigns every device connected to it a different 192.168.x.x IP within the network.

After reading a bit about it , I realised everything. After a factory reset on my router , I have a new IP address.

And you'll probably find that 192 address will change frequently as your router uses DHCP for all addresses above (usually) 192.168.1.100. So anytime it detects a device needing internet access it just assigns the next available address.

You could put you phone on a fixed IP below 100, and it would always connect on that number - Not sure why you'd want to though?

Assigning a fixed IP is useful if you're also using port forwarding on your router. I've never had reason to fix my phone's IP though.

Yeah, we're still undecided on what we're going to do with the thanks and likes systems, but the heart is definitely on its way out one way or another.
