Ipads vs Android Tablets-why so expensive?

JnEricsonx

Seriously, WTH am I missing. If I do the math, I can get a pretty damn nice Android tablet, for, if I spring for a 64 gig card on top of it, maybe 300 bucks tops or so? 300 bucks doesn't even get me a Ipad from last bloody year! Im curious as to what Im missing here? Not that I'd get a Ipad, Im just wondering why the hell they cost so much compared to a equivalent and decent android tablet?

What sort of Android tablet are you referring to? Because there's Android tablets and there's Android tablets. Which particular one have you got in mind?

There's cheapo budget ones, that are often nothing short of garbage. And there's decent, nicely made brand name ones like Samsung and Asus. Some of which can cost as much as the iPad.

I think Android manufacturers are finally getting it right when it comes to prices, you can pickup Samsung Tab 2 and Note 10" for under

Well, I mean like the Nexus 7, Galaxy 2, both of these seem more than fine for what I'd want to do with them, and then some, and both are south of 300 bucks.

My nexus 7 holds its own just fine. I brought it over to the girlfriends house a few weeks ago and her parents loved it. They asked how much it was, I replied 200 for a 16gb, and their reply was why did they spend 3 times as much on an ipad.

It's not that the ipad is any better. It's that your average consumer doesn't know what options they have.

They think tablet or smartphone and their first thought is omgipad. Fact is, they are horribly overpriced and as far as the phones go, there are much better phones out there.

You also have to look at how most consumers get their information. Most either get it second hand from other users, or based on tv ads. The iPad was the first truly mainstream tablet that was popular. Those who tried android tablets a couple years ago were disappointed and rightfully so. Since ICS was released, Android has really picked up it's tablet game, and is making major gains on the iPad. So people talk to others that have tablets and most who had older android tablets complained while those with early iPads were happy. Easy to figure out what to buy based on that. And if you look at tv ads, you get iStuff rammed down your throat while android has very little by comparison. The average consumer is usually too lazy to do real research before buying.
Personally I despise this one recent Best Buy commercial because it's more or less a commercial for all the iStuff.

I make a point to ask them if they have any nexus 7s in stock every time I'm there. They never know what it is

I don't know if they will ever carry it. I thought I remember reading that they decided they wouldn't sell it for fear of cannibalizing their entire tablet stock. They feared it would be popular enough that they would get stuck with other less popular tablets and would be unable to sell them. Thing is, they might have been right. ;)
