iphone 4 (jailbroken) owner, thinking about the s3...

having owned several jailbroken iphones im currently considering the new s3 as my next phone. ive always loved the android firmware over the irritatingly restricted iOS. which by the way is complete shit unless you go through the assache of jailbreaking your phone. as of now my phone is stacked w many tweaks, themes and what-not that i really like.
however my smart phone experience is limited to apple, itunes and cydia. so im hoping you guys can get me off on the right foot about the ropes on hacking/moding android/s3 devices?

I am sure helping you with modding the S3 is something we can handle ;) That forum is hopping, so you should find plenty of support (and fellow iOS converts as well!) Thanks for joining AF, and welcome! :)

what advice can you give me? how serious of an iphone owner were you? were you jailbroken on it, and if so what was the last firmware you ran?

i just see the move as giving up a lot with my apps is all. and cydia tweaks are always expanding. with android i dont even know where to start, the names of features, what tweaks are available and so forth...

Well, I neither have an S3, nor had an iPhone, so not going to be the best source for you. But check out this thread, lots of info on the extra benefits of the S3 over the iPhone. :)

You will find out a few things right away. Many of the paid apps are free on the Play Store (okay, they are ad supported, so technically not "free") and many of the major apps have Android versions or equivalents. You'll also notice that much of the tweaks you made after jailbreaking will be easily made on Android without root.

You can(without root):

  • Run totally stock S3 which will, in fact be Samsung's TouchWiz interface.
  • Don't like TouchWiz? replace it with one of the many homescreen launchers available.
  • Change your lock screen.
  • Widgets for just about everything.
  • One touch toggles on virtually any phone setting or function.
  • Change your browser from the stock Webkit to Chrome, Firefox, Dolphin, Opera ... etc.
And that's just for starters.

With root you can:

  • Swap out your kernel for one optimized for the way you want to run your phone.
  • Underclock/overclock to balance performance and power use. Undervolt to conserve the battery.
  • Disable or delete carrier/manufacturer bloatware
  • Flash a custom version of Android
...and the list goes on.

Whatever you end up doing, you'll find lots of helpful, intelligent people here. And, if you run into any wiseguys ... report them

and I'll take care of them for you. :)

While were on the topic; not that insont later lsearch" but what are these kernels i keep reading bits n pieces about?
-can you download flash/streaming movies to your phone to keep offline?
-can you change your icons and relocate them on your home screen?
-can you have dif homescreen n lockscreen wallpaper?
-the touchscreen launcher...iphone had this tweak called "activator"...i could pretty much launch anything by my own directed (redirdcted) command ie rather a short-press on my hold button for siri- i could disable that and enable siri (or whatever) through my volume buttons or even a three fingure swipe
-hows battery life range on the s3?
-understanding that firmware upgrades often threw the iphone jailbreakers into a panic, how will this upcoming jelly bean upgrade effect you guys?
-what "common" problems has the at&t s3 and ICS had?
-i read the at&t s3 is lacking quad core, whats that mean exactly?

This as concise an answer as any. By loading a custom kernel you can modify the way the operating system interacts with the hardware.

-can you download flash/streaming movies to your phone to keep offline?

As with any service, it depends on the licensing.

-can you change your icons and relocate them on your home screen?

Absolutely. I think there is a "post your homescreen" in just about every device forum. Check out a few to get some ideas with how creative you can get. :)

There are several apps that can customize or automate commands. It will be a little different than "activator" but certainly doable.

For those questions, you should ask the owners of the S3 in Samsung Galaxy S3 - Android Forums

Regarding the the quad core question, the intl version has the Exynos quad core processor, where the North American version has the S4 dual core processor, due to needing to be LTE compatible.

Thanks a lot
Tell me more about your "live wallpaper", can i save a gif frol the phones browser and set it to the background?

On my iphone i have vWallpaper and it allows me to take a mp4 and set it to my background, the problem is mp4's dont fot the resolution of my screen and im not the guru to edit that stuff to my liking, which is why i like gifs. However goven you android guys already have a panoramic feature enabled on your homescreen, im thinking that oblong mp4 of gif, if they can be set to the background will fit just fine
