Tim Cook is supposed to be a genius at supply chains, but it looks like they messed up on the iPhone 5 launch.
iPhone 5 sales exhaust initial supply, trip up servers | Apple - CNET News
The iPhone 5 went on sale at 12:01am today. Reports are that Apple's online stock sold out in an hour, and both Apple and AT&T's online stores crashed.
During the keynote, Apple said the phone would be available by Sept. 21, but current shipping estimates are being pushed back into late September or October.
Last year, it took about 22 hours to sell out of the pre-order launch day stock for the iPhone 4S. With the iPhone 5's stock sold out in an hour, it appears Apple has serious supply chain issues. For all of RIM's problems, at least you don't hear about their servers crashing or lack of stock.
Or, is it the old create a fake "shortage" to increase the hype trick?

True about the cables. Or they'll plug their cable into a USB 2.0 jack and lose most, if not all, of the advantages. Anything short of the Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 would probably diminish the transfer speed.
But I'm trying to put myself in their shoes. If they left it with the old connector, their laptops would be moving forward but their mobile devices wouldn't be able to take advantage of these new transfer protocols. If they changed, there would be a lot of transition aches. I think they were between a rock and a hard place. Given the same choice, I would have probably done the same.
i took a look and apparently, i am either blind or my google skills are lacking. I do know that they are calling the 5 "the biggest thing to happen to iphone since iphone."
you could be right. If you find a reliable source, post it please.
I sincerely doubt it. Despite bad reviews of "boring", people are going to buy it up. We knew that. People were "disappointed" last year, too. The 4S sold better than any previous iPhone.
Apple fans are extremely loyal, this will sell more than the 4S by a huge amount. especially as many will see the slightly larger screen as being a BIG step up for the iPhone. It's not even about the features, it's the name. I still have an urge to order it myself lol but it's through habit. It's just what you did, new iPhone comes out, you buy it. Don't matter what's on it.
It is an almost sheep like mentality, and this isn't a diss. Many will order just because they know other Apple fans will be ordering and won't want to feel left out. Truly strange phenomena but very real and powerful.

It isn't all that strange. Motorola just announced the new Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD. I want one. I am perfectly happy with my phone right now, but God help me I want to order one of the HD models. The only thing stopping me is that I have had 6 different phones in the last 12 months and I'm starting to think I have a problem.![]()
This isn't their first rodeo. They knew what the demand would be, why launch without enough supply? They JUST announced it, it's not like they announced it six months ago and ran into unexpected manufacturing delays. If shortly after launch they all of a sudden have plenty to go around, we'll know what's up.I sincerely doubt it. Despite bad reviews of "boring", people are going to buy it up. We knew that. People were "disappointed" last year, too. The 4S sold better than any previous iPhone.
At most they are marking it as a shortage while they tabulate all the initial requests. Once they get smoothed out, I suspect that some, if not most/all, of those people put on the 2 week deferral will get it on the 21st.

someone in another thread (can't find it now) posted a link to a macforums thread where people were discussing the keynote and the ip5. there sure was a lot of hate (for android and alternative systems) over there; little objectivity. anyway, i quickly got cold and scared there so i hightailed it back here![]()

Yea I saw that link. I read the whole thing, was very Interesting. A lot of the actual apple fans themselves were really let down, like genuinely. We hyped up the iphone5 too much I think. Most of them will still end up buying one though, the pull will be too strong.

And it's different here how? Lol
the threads that i've read (and i've been catching up haha) so far contained objective posts, and if the trolling got too out of hand, there were people who actually urged calm.
well, my home is still Mobileread though.
Agreed... That is the nature of these forums though.. Of course for the most part we are biased. But this is one of the best... If not only forum site where it's not out if control one sided. There is actually a good amount of contrast here, and if it does get to be one sided a mod comes in to tie up the loose ends.... I love that about this place.
