iPhone 5 - Retina 4" Display?

Okay so I was wondering, the iPhone 5 is meant to be "announced" in September but not released until later.

Could this be due to the fact that Apple need to wait for Samsung to switch their manufacturing process, to the laser-based tech, so that they can begin creating AMOLED-like screens that are 4"+ and still have a 'retina' resolution?

I know it's very speculative atm, but I was just wondering.

Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas?
 
I think they will discuss iOS5 in June, then maybe launch/announce the next iPhone in September.
I have the iPhone4 at the moment, and I'd like to see a larger screen at a similar overall device size. I have no complaints about the device as it stands, it does everything I ask of it perfectly.
I still hanker after a Galaxy S2 though - or to a lesser extent, the Sensation. The good thing about the iPhone is that they hold their value exceptionally well, so I won't lose out moving to Android, but then again I will lose out if/when I go back to iPhone (as I have twice before).

Variety is the spice of life!!!
 
At this point, I see Samsung getting their manufacturing online for making a Super AMOLED Plus qHD 4.3" display for their Galaxy SIII. They've kept a leash on their leading technology for their own devices and I doubt that changes, even for a customer like Apple, since the Galaxy series now directly competes with the iPhone internationally. Don't expect Jobs to settle for a toned down, second fiddle OLED variant. Things may change when another manufacturer gets in the game (thought I read that LG was getting into mobile phone OLED manufacturing) and competition ramps up. With so many LCD manufacturers, Apple was able to approach the market with a lucrative deal to secure a class-leading display with higher resolution and contrast. For now, Samsung has a grip on the mobile OLED display market.
 
LG has been supplying 3.5" retina IPS/LCD display to apple for iPhone4. There were reports that Apple signed contract with Toshiba for displays on their future devices though. Not sure who's going to provide 4" retina for iPhone5 though. The reason for iPhone5 delay is Japan earthquake disrupted some supply chain for its parts, not just due to display thing.

Technically if they still retain the same resolution (960X640) on 4" iPhone5, its dpi number will go below 300 and it's not exactly retina.
 
until Apple gets true multi-tasking, widgets (of some kind), 4" screen and turn-by-turn nav, they won't win me back. that is where their hardware/iOS is lacking for me.

Android was losing in the performance area, but dual-core devices and Gingerbread have killed that negative imo.

really?? In what sense? My DHD was spot on for performance - excluding battery life:mad:

As an aside I have no interest in Apple products and never will - they are not enough and do not give enough to me.
 
there is talk about the iphone 5 and 4S back and forth so there could be confusion. the iphone 4s will be a refresh like the 3Gs was for the 3G iphone. a few cosmetic changes and performance difference. so just because the screen will be possibly bigger doesn't mean it's the iphone 5. this more then likely gives apple room to make something even better or have time to go through with whatever their plans are. some people think this is dumb but they did it before with the 3G to the 3Gs. difference is todays tech is way more advanced and will consumers settle for the slight bump. i'm sure they will because for whatever reason apple heads think godly of their iphone. it introduces things that have already been introduced or is not the only phone that can do this and that but people act like it's the only phone to do anything. don't get me wrong, it is a nice piece of material and functions very well. it's just wayyyyyyyyyyyy over exaggerated on what it does.
 
The thing that pisses me off is when people think updates or evolution will be delayed because of verizon or the AT&T tmob thing.

Has anyone told the yanks that there are other countries?????

I'm currently using several phones, I'm so addicted :)

Not being married to any brand or platform, I enjoy choices and having several activated lines on both AT&T and Verizon allows me that luxury. My point is simply that first hand experience has revealed that Android is my favorite by far.

Amongst the various new phones I have is an iPhone 4. That's where a lot of my music is from the iPod days. I just don't like Apple's closed eco system and arrogant attitude. I don't like the tiny display, even though it does look nice, it's miserable to use. I'm not bashing Apple, I use their computers as well as PC's.

But for phones I really enjoy Androids.

Yeah, it's possible. The question is, do you need it on a 4" display? And don't forget that every extra pixel you throw in, the GPU has to be able to drive it which means you take a peformance hit for a resolution bump, all else being equal. This is not the desktop arena where power consumption is of little concern and GPUs can handle any practical resolution without a hiccup. Not sure I see a point in hitting HD for a phone. qHD would be good enough for me at 4.3". Plus, scaling 1080p content is easier on the processor at 540 lines of resolution vs the interpolation that must be done for 480, 640 or 720 lines of resolution...hence the qHD standard.

I'm thinking they'll market is as "better than your retinas", then sell a proprietary connector for a ridiculous amount of money to bypass your inferior eyesight.

the performance hit is exactly why i'm glad Samsung stuck with what's considered the standard res now and worked on improving the actual display. people complain about it not being qHD but that's a positive in my book.

and until someone makes a qHD screen without the Pentile Matrix, i'm not even considering it. so next year, if they go qHD with Pentile, i'll stick with my SGS2 for another year
 
The iPhone 5 will be a nice upgrade for people who already love their iPhone. Larger 4" screen, faster processor, updated iOS. It'll be nice no doubt; but I don't see it drawing away any hardcore Android fans.

That's right. Unless they make qHD with true RGB square pixels, its text clarity would be similar to WVGA screen with RGB pixels and there is no meaningful advantage in qHD screen. It's going to only drag overall graphic performance.
