Iphone in...New every 2 out

Just posted this in another thread:

Hey Verizon thanks for getting rid of new every two. Really gonna keep a lot of customers around. You go ahead and pull all the At&t customers over to your network so they can get their precious *phone in turn opening up their network for me to enjoy.

If Verizon ups their data plan for 4G it's back to the good old basic phone for me. It's not worth my money.

While it was a nice feature, now their upgrade policy is the same as pretty much any other US carrier. I think that, after my current NE2 is used up, I'll switch to one-year contracts.

Still, I think that in order to use NE2, I have to sign up for another 2-year plan (not a 1-year). So, if we're talking about a phone that is $200 on a 2-year plan, I can either pay $170 with NE2, or $270 for the same phone on a 1-year plan. Thankfully, I have a long time before I have to make this decision.

This is something I've been thinking about. I've been thinking more and more about getting an android tablet, and while I'll probably wait a bit, I have been toying with the notion of going back to a dumb phone at some point and using a tablet like I would a smart phone (and paying only 1 data charge). It wouldn't be as convenient, I guess, for some things. Barcode scans at the store, for example, would be out. But I'm really considering going this route.

I still remember my Computer Science professor explaining that access to the Internet would get less expensive as accessibility became more widespread.

This is true for the providers, as they pay less for access every year. However, they have no problem marking it up for us.

For wireless carriers, there is good reason for this. All the back-haul in the world doesn't make up for the fact that you have a finite amount of spectrum, but an expanding base of users. This means you have to use some form of network management, and the best way to control the amount of data users consume is to charge them for this data. Newer technology allows for more simultaneous connections within the same spectrum (and advantage that CDMA has over GSM).

As for wired internet, most of the providers are continuing to raise costs there to make up for losses in their other core businesses. In the case of Cable providers, they raise costs and impose caps with overages as a way to prevent internet video from cutting into their core business. DSL operators have to make up for lost revenue from landlines as more people go wireless-only.

This is just another reason for me to consider jumping ship to another carrier, maybe even AT&T, when the time comes.

This obviously has something to do with Apple's requirement that they control pricing on their devices. Apple doesn't allow vendors to put their devices "on sale", Apple is in complete control of the pricing.

not the best news in the world, but we are all grandfathered in for one more upgrade. This is really not all that surprising. Verizon has been scaling back these programs for a while. The policy was a lot more liberal even in the first two quarters of 2010. If you remember; a little sweet talking could get you the new every two at month 18(or earlier). They changed that policy in July and no longer allowed for CRS to push up the date.

I am seriously considering paying cash for my next phone. I hate being in a contract.

You are probably right. Jobs is such a control freak. VZW should have told him to go **** himself, but I am sure VZW did not shed any tears in cutting the program.

Is the veriPhone going to be a 4G LTE phone? If not, I can just picture the crazed Apple nutcases screaming bloody murder when the Thunderbolt comes out. Just like when I showed my buddy that his 4G iPhone STILL doesn't have true multi-tasking.

I am not sure an Iphone will ever have true multi tasking. They have a clever workaround, but I do not think ol' StevieJ believes his subjects really need multi-tasking.

And yeah. I do not think this thread will ever be noticed after being moved to no mans land.

Yeah this tread has potential. Let it ride in the Incredible section for a bit Mods..... Very interested to see everyones response.
