iPhone lover wanting to turn to Android

So,

I am an iPhone user since 2007. I love the device but have slowly gotten bored of the UI and irritated with no-home screens and Apple's App Store policies.

Now I know if I switch to Android, I'll miss the Apple App Store but I feel I can live with that. The only thing I'm worried about is that so many Android phones (Dream and Magic) are stuck at older firmwares and the firmware update process is not as streamline across all devices as compared to Apple's. I can still update my V1 iPhone to 3.1.3 and get almost all updated features. The reason I am hesitant is that I don't want my phone to become extinct in terms of features in a year or less. My phone of choice would be the Nexus One since I don't like Sense UI or the Droid for it's bulky-ness.

Would you think the Nexus One being a "Google" phone would receive all updates in time or is it too soon to tell?

The Nexus One is Google's phone and will always be the first to receive any and all updates. The reason some phones don't get the updates right away is because the manufacturer (ie HTC) has to receive the update and code it for their Sense UI. I agree with you though. Definitely a weakness with Android OS phones. About the marketplace, I had/have an iPhone and N1 and think the quality of apps (excluding games) is equal between the iPhone and N1. Plus, when you add widgets and the ability to root and extend battery life by a few hours, it makes the N1 that much better.

Yes, your reply helped a lot. I think I'm gonna go ahead give the Nexus One a shot, I have four months or so before the next iPhone releases.

I love the widgets, half the reason I'm switching!

Well I'd like to know that as well.
Is the G1 a "Google phone?" If so, was it the first to get updates over the regular htc models? And is it on 2.1?

The G1 runs 1.6. But there has been rumours that 2.1 would be coming to it.
 
Did the G1 ship with 1.5 or 1.6 again? I'm guessing 1.5 since it was the very first Android phone and everything, and hasn't it gotten a 1.6 update since? I could be very, very wrong though.
 
Which, I guess, is better than phones shipped with 1.5 and still stuck with 1.5 to this day. Don't think the G1 will ever get 2.1, though.
