Iris scanner always on?

Have had the S8 a couple of days, set it up, and changing settings. I started to set the iris scanner, but decided since I wear glasses not to bother. Now, the iris scanner light seems to be on 90% of the time, but it does go dark. Not sure how bright it would be if operative. It's certainly not as bright as the blue notification light.

Is this normal, that is, it lights a bit? Seems to me not since it does go dark.

When you turn on the display of your phone and swipe up, the iris scanner will activate and glow bright red (left of the earpiece). If you have it set to activate as soon as the display is on, it will happen as soon as you wake the phone.

Once you actually unlock your phone however, the red light goes off. So no, it's not always running. Only when it needs to be.
