Is Android a 64bit OS?

I just got my first Android phone recently (Droid X) so I'm pretty new to the scene.

I have been wondering whether the Android OS is 32bit or 64bit? Are ARM processors 64bit capable? Would the current Android OS be able the handle 4GB of RAM or higher?

Not now, but someday.

I think we will see a full overhaul of android (or whatever comes after it) when the day comes that we are putting over 4 gigs of ram in our phones. The average computer sits right around 4 gigs as is... Biggest improvements to worry about currently (IMO) are battery life.

ARM processors (which most portable devices use) for the most part are 32 bit. So I would assume that Android is only 32 bit. But I'm sure sometime in the future we will see the need for 64 bit.

The day we get ultra solid state memory on our computers the type of hard drives whih will be able to share the storage with random access memory on the computer. At that time we will br able to actually put full operating system and a 64 bit on that point too :)
