Is Google Talk "Always On?"

My boyfriend uses a BB and loves Blackberry Messenger.

I'd like to be able to use Google Talk on my Hero and his BB in lieu of SMS for chatting with him while at work, so that I can turn my phone on Airplane mode with only wifi on to save my battery (signal is terrible in my office)

My concern is that I'm not sure if Google Talk is always connected like his BBM seems to be. Anyone have any insight on this? I see that "Automatically Log In" is an option....but say for instance we don't chat for a few days and he decides to send me a message. Will it be pushed to my phone?

Yes....as far as I know and have experienced. My friends on the other side of the planet often start conversations with me this way.

Thanks that's great to know :D

The one bar that constantly switches back and forth to roaming barely lasts my battery 10 hours out of a 12 hour shift. Can't wait to try and keep it on airplane with wifi.

Airplane mode shuts off all connection. Google Talk uses data so it would shut off along with everything else when you put the phone in airplane mode.

I get messages from google talk all the time, apparently my phone tells everyone of my contacts that I am always online.

Its on unless you sign out go to: google talk>menu>more>sign out...then you will only be signed in when you go back into it

I've often looked to see what apps are running on my phone (Settings -> Applications -> Running services) and I've noticed that GTalkService is always running. So I'd assume that would be a "yes" to your question. Don't quote me on this as I don't honestly know. But I saw this question and it reminded me of this.
