Help Is GPS on?? No - Icon Stays Anyway

H20nly

Newbie
I have a GPS icon in the notifications/status bar across the top of my display. It came on last week and I cannot figure out why. I have checked my GPS options in Settings. All 3 options (Verizon, Standalone, Google) are unchecked. I have checked them to turn them on... then off again to see if the icon will go away. No luck.

When I turned on the Verizon GPS setting the status bar icon suddenly had "waves" coming out the right side of it that look like the signal strength meter for wifi, but sideways.

Could some app be circumventing the main GPS settings?

facebook?

The "crosshair bullseye" thing? That's the e911 icon. And it drove me crazy until I flashed a different ROM.

My understanding is that the icon is there to notify you that your position is/will be available to emergency services should you call 911. I was unable to find a way to turn that icon off.

The smarter way to do this would have been to have an icon come on only if your position WASN'T available to 911. I have no idea how to turn it off or why yours wasn't on previously. (I've only had my Rezound a couple weeks, and the icon was on all the time for me.)

Edit: Oh, and it does not mean GPS is on (as far as I can tell) location data is based cell tower triangulation (I think).

Yep. Sounds like you know the one...

I had some weirdness with sync issues on my mail accounts and did a factory reset about 2 weeks ago. I didn't have the GPS icon there until last week though... which was when (despite my better judgement) I used facebook to post a video that would not work through other forwarding methods. I'm not sure if the icon appeared then, but it was not there before. I previously had avoided facebook's less than generous contribution to Verizon's decision about what is stuck for life on my phone...

[/root suggestion]
rooting is not an option for me.

I really don't like the notion of having a tracking system in my pocket at all times. Call me paranoid. I realize that being connected to a cellular network is not too far off, but the difference is... I want a cellular connection.

Why is root not an option?

And yes on stock HTC that GPS icon will always be there. When you root it just hides the icon...but big brother is still watching!

Root isn't an option because my company pays for my phone. I can't risk voiding the warranty in the event that something odd happens that causes me to need a replacement... That is to say, I don't want to risk it. I would rather have the handset replacement option than the guarantee of bill.

I've had this phone since December. The icon has not been there the whole time (except when the GPS was turned on in Settings).

I used to think that icon was gps as well. The actual gps symbol looks like a satellite dish with green signal arcs coming out of it.

:dontknow:

We must all have something a little different then.

Like I mentioned in my OP, if I turn on the GPS then I end up with little waves coming out the right hand side of this cross hair looking icon.

I'm just hoping its not some facebook setting or some other presumptive company's app turned on in some sideways notion that everyone needs to know where I am all the time and that I need to use my battery up to broadcast it.
