From what I've gathered, SoftAP allows creation of an infrastructure mode wifi tether that can be seen by more devices than the standard ad-hoc method the Elite currently is limited to. I came across this page that shows how to port WLAN SoftAP to Gingerbread: Porting WLAN SoftAP to Android - OMAPpedia
I'm trying to teach myself the finer points of working with the Android filesystem, but my time is limited and I can't install Linux on the computer I'm using. I've tried using Cygwin but I can't even figure out how to rebuild a boot.img that doesn't send me into a bootloop.
So I thought I'd throw this idea out there and see if there's any merit to the idea of including it in the Elite kernel.
