Help Is it safe to upgrade to 6.0.1 from 5.1?

As I've posted before, my Nexus 7 stopped upgrading after it reached 5.1. I never received the 5.1.1 update on this device. However, I just received a notification to upgrade to 6.0.1.

Is it OK to do this? Or will it be a problem that I didn't install 5.1.1 first? I don't understand why it never gave me the update for it. But now that 6.0.1 is available to download, I don't think I will ever get the 5.1.1 OTA.

I got a Nexus 7 for Christmas and when I first powered it up it was on 5.0.x and prompted to download 5.1, then when that finished it prompted for 6.0.1. I installed both updates and then did a factory reset before signing into my Google account and setting it up. It's working fine for me.
