Root is it stock 2.2.1 or stock 2.2 updated to 2.2.1?

my buddy got a used optimus m on 2.2.1 and wants to root it. now i could just go thru the long process to root on 2.2.1 but i would rather downgrade (if i can) to 2.2 and use z4root. how could i tell (if i even can) if it came stock with 2.2 or 2.2.1? stock 2.2.1 as i understand it cannot be downgraded but a phone that came with 2.2 and then updated can, am i correct?

Downgrades are possible. There is some consternation about the matter here, however. One member posted some files and instructions describing the process. However, the member since redacted his post. He also does not want people to use the method. I am not sure why.

I suspect you could rummage through the forum and find what you seek. Hopefully, I am not causing any animosity with anyone by pointing this out. Good luck.

lol really? you don't know why? just go back and read the post and see how many stupid ppl can't read and follow directions thus creating a million posts for him to reply to trying to help said ppl. . most of which prob should have never attempted the process in the first place lol.

That's what I was thinking. Apparently downgrading doesn't work with stock 2.2.1 phones so I don't want to attempt it on this phone if I don't know for sure if its stock or not

why not just put one of 2.2.1 roms on it. . that would prob be alot easier right?

Go through the steps to downgrade from 2.2.1. Takes only a few minutes and causes no damage as long as you follow directions.
- If it was upgraded, you'll be where you need to be, 2.2 and fully functional.
- If it was stock, your screen will be black but your phone is unharmed. Just wait a few moments as you will not know when it's finished booting. After a bit just use the LG Updater to return to 2.2.1.

The difference hasn't been discovered. As far as anyone can tell, the upgraded 2.2.1 and stock 2.2.1 have the same information. There hasn't been a way yet to tell without attempting the downgrade. This is how we got to the point we're at now, lol.
